I Don't Understand White People

Posted over 2 years ago
I don't mean that I don't understand their actions or their motives (That's a whole 'nother story). I mean I don't understand them. Their language!I just wrote a paper about how white and black Americans actually speak completely different languages (remember the scene in "Money Talks" where Chris Tucker says that Charlie Sheen's fiancee is "phat"?). We really do communicate so differently.Take music, for example (duh!). When black people make songs, we say what we mean. "I'm gonna go kill me a nigga, go fuck me a bitch, go smoke me a blunt, then take my handicapped grandmother grocery shopping." BAM! Simple. Can white people say that? Nah, they'd mean the exact same thing, but the wording would be more like, "The buzzards cast no shadows, but my love does, when the smoke clears, life has moved on." What the fuck?Goodbye Apathyby OneRepublicI can't sleep now, no, not like I used toI can't breathe in and out like I need toIt's breaking ice.. now, to make any movementWhat's your vice? you know that mine's the illusionAnd all at once (as i'm trying) I can help you out (just to keep things right)I'll be what you need (I kill myself to makeeverything perfect for ya)Goodbye apathy, so long apathySo don't sit still, don't you move away from hereSo goodbye apathy (as i'm trying), so long fancy free( just to keep things right)Goodbye apathy, (kill myself to make everythingperfect for ya)I don't wanna be youI don't walk right, not like I used toThere's a jump in my step as I rush to see youI could be happy here as long as you're near to meAs long as you're close to meNow that I'm alright (as i'm trying) I can help youout ( just to keep things right)I'll be what you need (I kill myself to makeeverything perfect for ya)Goodbye apathy, goodbye apathySo don't you stop pushing me, I can take so muchSo goodbye apathy (as i'm trying), so long fancy free( just to keep things right)Goodbye apathy, (kill myself to make everythingperfect for ya)I don't wanna be... you...Everybody is watching you, everybody is watching metoo .... Okay, so what the hell is this guy trying to say with "goodbye apathy"? Kinda sounds like, "Baby, I'm going to try harder to make you happy instead of just being so nonchalant about everything." Cool. A pretty pussified sentiment (I mean, what self-respecting man would care about his woman's feelings? Who gave women permission to have feelings?), but I'll let it go, cuz I like the song. But, could some of my brothers of the other color please interpret a few of these lyrics? It's breaking ice.. now, to make any movementWhat's your vice? you know that mine's the illusionI don't wanna be youEverybody is watching you, everybody is watching me too

  1. contrabandwidth says Is this really a discussion on metaphors and similes? I would have to say that the lyrics read like some angsty teenage poetry (though I haven't heard the music yet, perhaps they make it bearable). I'll humor you and give my interpretation. It’s breaking ice.. now, to make any movement To break the ice is to start conversation with others, so perhaps there is uncomfortable silence between the two, on that any movement (like a kiss, perhaps?) would rid them of this tension. I Don't wanna be you I don't wanna control you baby. Read: I'm not like those other assholes, I'm sensitive and I just want to let you be you (popular "sensitive guy" talk used to try and get laid, usually unsuccessfully). I would say if you were to judge us white folk from said lyrics, were parenthetical. There are always many asides to what we say. We want to say something along the lines of "I wanna fuck you like a ho" but we have to ad an aside "(meanwhile respecting your space/feelings as a person, and only if it was mutually consensual)". I think it sort of stands as an example of the PC mindset gone wrong. While there will always be the place for the rock n' roll bad boy, you'll also find your sensitive John Mayer/James Blunt types getting a lot of tail from their schtick, too. Both persona's attract a different caliber of "listener" with whom the singer would like to bed.

  2. iwanttofillyourmouthwithspiders says Hmmm... I can give it a shot. If I were listening to this song, I think that I would take it as meaning that he is doesnt want to say/do anything to upset her, basically he feels like he's walking on thin ice and just bringing up what the problem is in their relationship could be the end of it. He is attached to the way people perceive their relationship, all happy and lovey dovey, but that aint really the case... Okay, thats my attempt, now enjoy a brief interlude...

  3. TroyPowers says Contra: I love discussions on the meanings of songs. Cuz the exact same lyrics can mean so many different things to so many different people. So you're saying that things are just really tense between them. So, every movement is like breaking the ice all over again. Okay. I like that. Maybe the song is just so confusing to me because the lyrics seem really hopeful, but the music seems pretty sad. iwanttofillyourmouthwithspiders: Man, FUCK the song, what does your NAME mean? :) I can definitely see the "walking on thin ice" thing. That kinda fits more with the music than lines like "There’s a jump in my step as I rush to see you." By the way, how long can a guy rock his head back and forth like that before he slips a disk or something? You'd think there would be a rash of old rock n roll guys coming down with spinal injuries.

  4. msquared64 says "I don't wanna be you" = "I wanna be ON you instead." "Everybody is watching you, everybody is watching me too" = "Because LOOK! We're on TRL!!" "It’s breaking ice.. now, to make any movement" = "See my ice pick. It is as simple as it's name. However, if you piss me off, it will serve a different purpose." "What’s your vice? you know that mine’s the illusion" = I have no idea.

  18. 2Serenity says I agree with you Troy. It is a cultural difference in how we (black people) use terminology. For me saying bad is good and vice versa. Many people get that but when I get into my slang I usually do not say it around many people unless I know you are following what I am saying. Where is Dave Chappelle when u need him?!

  19. Lizziegreeneyes says *Jennifer:* I am guessing I could pick up mosta what you'd put down... I agree there is a difficulty for some to understand a different cultural terminology than their own - think maybe some of that is due to age, some due to close-mindedness, some ignorance. A person has to be open to take it all in I think. Maybe part of why I do get it/_understand_ different slang/terminology is becuase I listen to everything... and what I don't get (mostly the weird slang *Dale* uses ;P, I have the urban dictionary and google to save the day) :)
