I also think it's time for an MP3 upload...my favorite part of the day.

This is for the ladies...and the ladies love it....except the ladies that don't....which is many...oh ladies....

Questions? Comments? Existential Ramifications?

P.S. - I should give a little credit to my roommate Eric K., who tickled the drums for the track.

Time is of the Essence: RPM CHALLENGE 2007

Maybe you're prolific and you knock off an album in a month all the time. Maybe you don't. Either way, you should try and then submit it to the RPM CHALLENGE 2007. That's right: write and record an album in one month (February, to be specific). I don't believe there's any prizes or anything, it's just something to do because you love. You love it, I know. So here's the link, check it out:

http://www.rpmchallenge.com/

Have mercy, but I might just give it a shot. Stranger things have happened.

Skeleton Bones and Cracked Gravestones

To start my MP3/self-indulgent frenzy I'm going to post a cover. I'm not sure of the legality of it all, but it's not like I'm making money, now is it....

Sigh.

If you've been observant, I'm a little Tom Waits obssessed. Anyways, a while back I decided I was going to cover all of Rain Dogs. That was around half a year ago and I think I got a little sidetracked. I managed to get 1.75 tracks done....so here's the one that is pretty well done.

I'm gonna get back to it, I swear. That is, I will unless I don't.

Any death-threats or unending praises are welcome.

A Glimpse of the Disastrous Future.

Apparently I've been listening to myself a lot recently. While it is true that I am pretty okay, I'd like to mention someone else who is pretty okay. He's probably even more okay than me.

That's right it's...
Mr. Chad Vangaalen of Canada. More specifically, of Calgary.

I've recently stumbled across his most recent album, "Skelliconnection":

It's an unassuming album that grows on you the more you hear from it. It opens in left field with rocker "_Flower Gardens_" (which contains absurdly lengthy stuttering lines that leave a goofy grin on my face), then veers away to spacey folk and inventive arrangements. The second last track, "_Sing Me 2 Sleep_", contains one of my favorite recent lyrics:

"_...sing about our evil ways / and what's hidden in our DNA..._"

I think this line is a simple gem of pessimistic humanism. Maybe once we acknowledge what lurks inside us all, we can overcome it.

Sad Songs for the Weather

This weekend is turning out to be a bust, and to top that off I think I'm coming down with that whole S.A.D. thing. It's dark and gloomy and getting cold here in Toronto so let's revel in depression...what's your favorite depressing artists/songs? (*Side Note...extra points for having the Eels in there...minus points for Elliott Smith because it's taken for a given)

Extra Credit Question: Why is depressing music so comforting anyways?

Moving Pictures...now with Sound!!

Cinema and music. A combination made in heaven, up there with peanut butter and jelly, and chocolate and peanut butter, and peanuts and peanut butter. When a score works with a film to amplify a theme or elevate mood it can be a transcendent device. True, I'm not fully versed in the cannon of score composers but there's nothing that connects to me more than the work of Jon Brion. Maybe it's his encyclopedic knowledge of 60's pop and rock or his adventurousness...maybe it's because he produced Aimee Mann. Anyways, I know I like what I like.

FAVORITE JON BRION SCORES (That I've seen):
4). Boogie Nights, Magnolia (Tie)
3). I Heart Huckabees
2). Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
1). Punch-Drunk Love

Apparently he did the score to The Break Up, but I can't bring myself to see the thing. I'll just have to wonder and hope the movie didn't ruin the score.

The score to Punch-Drunk Love is so integral to the movie and so sonically fascinating that I have to place it atop the rest of his sterling compositions. If you haven't seen Punch-Drunk Love, see it (it's arty and is designed to show how arty Adam Sandler is). [Side Note - Eternal Sunshine is still the best movie on this list. It haunts me to this day...it rattles chains in my closet...it ran over my dog...]

??"Cuz her last relationship fucked her up.
Got hurt majorly, finds it tough to trust.
Looked at the ashtray, then looked back up,
Spinnin it away on the tabletop.
She looked much fitter than saturday just.
She worked in JD's with dan.
Back then I figured she was pretty damn rough,
But she was only wearin her work stuff.
And in these clothes she looked more than buff,
She stirred her straw, sat up to adjust.
I told her I thought it was important,
That you could get lost in conversation.
Chattin shit, sittin in, oblivion
With that person who's your special one.
She said she was the worst pool player under the sun,
But blokes go easy so she always won.??

??I saw this thing on ITV the other week,
Said, that if she played with her hair, she's probably keen
She's playin with her hair, well regularly,
So i reckon i could well be in.??

??She didn't look too bored with what I was sayin.
Her hair looked much better than the other day.
She had her fingers 'round her hair, playin'.
I Saw on the telly that's a good indication.
Stood up to buy the next drink though, "Nay."
Suppose that's just our girl's way.
I'm tryin to think what else I could say,
Peelin' the label off, spinnin the ashtray.
Yeah actually, yes, she did look pretty neat.
Her perfume smelled expensive and sweet.
I felt like my hair looked a bit cheap,
Wished I'd had it cut back last week.
She kept givin me this look, cuz she would speak.
Was she only friendly, or was she a keep?
Asked her if she wanted the same again to drink.
Started to turn and get up out my seat.??

??I saw this thing on ITV the other week,
Said, that if she played with her hair, she's probably keen
She's playin with her hair, well regularly,
So i reckon i could well be in.??

??She said that her close mates all were
Always the most important thing to her.
I said I thought it was a bit more blurred.
She asked what I meant by that as she stirred.
I told her about the money and what had occurred
With it goin missing from the living room, so.
With my best mates all there standin by,
Right where I left it, under their eyes.
So surely one of them might have spied
What happened to my money at that time.
I felt like they were all smilin on the side.
She was like "fair play" she couldn't say why.
She didn't know what all my mates were like.
And I said she just might be right.
Wish I had someone I could always rely,
Someone to get lost chattin to all night.??

??I saw this thing on ITV the other week,
Said, that if she played with her hair, she's probably keen
She's playin with her hair, well regularly,
So i reckon i could well be in.??

??As I walked back with more drinks to our place,
She had her phone stuck to the side of her face.
I sat for a minute while she chatted away
'bout somethin with her mom and her birthday.
Played for a bit with the same ashtray,
Thought about things while i sat and waited.
It was nice to chat about the shit in my head,
Someone who just listens to you instead.
I looked at the barman, wiping down again,
Looked at the football on the tv set,
Tryin to look like i weren't just waitin there
For her conversation to come to an end.
I look at my watch and realized right then
That, for three hours, been in conversation.
Before she put her phone down, she switched to silent,
And we carried on chattin for more than that again.??

??I saw this thing on ITV the other week,
Said, that if she played with her hair, she's probably keen
She's playin with her hair, well regularly,
So i reckon i could well be in.??

To tell you the truth, I'm not crazy about The Streets but sometimes that Mr. Skinner hits the nail on the head. This song describes how I fall in love. The nagging little insecurities and constant analysis (does she mean this, or just saying this, what does this mean....). The discovery of small beauty. The awkwardness and the sweetness. The hope and doubt. The steady descent.

Hey, neurosis is a turn on, right? Right??

Tomorrow there shall be a great tragedy. Orphans everywhere. You can adopt these things faster than you can say Madonna. So do the world a favour, bring these misfits into your home. Love them. Feed them. Listen to them. Don't turn your back on them, they might smother you in your sleep.

Workplace Anthems

I work at a fairly important Canadian financial institution. I don't actually work for them, but I do work for a company that has a contract with them. By work I mean I perform menial tasks of the most stupor-inducingly trivial kind. Also, I wear a uniform...so enough said. Needless to say, it's not where I see my life heading but seeing as I lack direction it is where I am for now. So in order to keep myself sane I've usually got a song stuck in my head. Usually, what I most often hear in my head during the majority of my life (ie. work hours) is some sort of anti-corporate condemnation.

Currently it's Piggies, written by the venerable George Harrison. Now all I can see are suits ready to "eaaatt the bayyyyy-con....".

Another good one is God's Away on Business by The Good Doctor (Tom Waits).

_So here's the question:_ Do you have a similar job-damning theme song? Are you content in your profession? Do you know where the bathroom is in this place?

The Excellent Pedestrian

The Number One Post. I'm nervous.

Welcome. First off I'd like to tell you, yes you, that you have excellent taste. Yes you do, don't deny. I would also like to tell you that I have excellent taste as well. Everyone should believe they have excellent taste and what is better than sharing that excellent taste with strangers on the internet? Nothing. I generally avoid narcisism, but sharing things I'm passionate about (music, film, literature, culture etc.) is wonderful.

I've never been cutting edge, but I'd like to think that I'm a fast walking pedestrian when it comes to this sort of thing. So if you've kind of heard of this fairly popular band, I probably have too! Then we can gush about them together. How fun is that? Pretty fun.

So to wrap it up: I'm a pretty okay guy. Why don't we do lunch some day. We can talk about mergers and acquisitions and you can order whatever you want on the menu. Except the caviar. I'm not paying for fish eggs.

P.S. - Here's _The Decemberists_ as Lego. I didn't make it, don't sue me.
