WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Album versus Radio Versions

Posted over 3 years ago
So there I was, a simple 3 years ago when I discovered Evanescence. I thought the song Bring Me To Life was pretty good, so I invested in Fallen. As I listened to it (over and over, as it turned out) I came to love a lot of the songs and generally the album as a whole. The opportunity arose to see them in concert in Cleveland, so I bought tickets as soon as they were available. The short summary (since its not too important here) is that the concert rocked. What was so amazing was what they did as a live version of My Immortal. It was their first encore song, starting out with just Amy returning to the stage. She sat behind the keyboard, playing an singing (singing only to me, as it felt). Then, after the second verse - the lights flashed on as the guitars cut in! This was amazing because on the album version, this is where the strings came in. WOW - what a different approach to the song. I was pretty impressed, liking things even more than I had previously. Here's the rub - this was all before My Immortal had been released as a single. My only experience with this song was from listening to the album. Because of this, the "rock" version of the song was a complete (and welcome) surprise. When the song was finally released as a single, they chose to release that "rock" or "live" version. What a tragedy. How many people would now miss out on that experience I had? How many people would find the "album" version wimpy, because it involved strings instead of guitars? How many....?How many times has anyone else in the MOG-o-sphere felt like this?--Torch

  1. Takeshi Kovacs says Not having a radio reference point - I can't really comment, except that I don't have a radio reference point. What erks me is when there are two versions of the same song on an album - one as intended and one for general consumption. I guess it's the same as "director's cut" or "Unrated" DVDs. At least we don't get the full screen versus wide screen version of albums. :)

  2. rei says Yup, deja vu time. I actually thought that the version with the guitars was the album version [didn't get the album] and that the strings version was just a radio edit. The same thing happened with Sarah McLachlan's single for Building A Mystery - it actually had a better mix than the album version.
