Stroke 9's debut album
Nasty Little Thoughts is another great contribution to the Californian post-angst rock genre. The song you’ve heard is Track 3 – “Little Black Backpack†– "Don't WannaDon't wanna talk about itI say why not?Don't wanna think about itI say there's gotTo be some good reason For your little black backpackUpsmackTurn around he's on his back - and -Don't wanna tangle with youI'd rather tangle with himI think I'm gonna bash his head inAnd this shouldn't concern you except thatJust don't expect to get your bloody black backpack back"I expect that far more people will be familiar with Stroke 9 than were familiar with Parts 1 or 2 - which is great.
Nasty Little Thoughts is another album chock-full of great lyrical whiticisms that really add depth to the music."...my less than large brain is contorting the synapses sent from the ends of my dangling nerves" – from
One Time, Track 9"Frozen fingers on my skinGuilty hands clutching ginYour tin, thin eyes can't see withinSoul to soul and skin to skin we burn" – from
Down, Track 10The songs also cover some great topics, like El Nino (
Tail of the Sun, Track 4), the fear of falling in love too fast (
Washin' + Wonderin', Track 5), and "someone successfully jumping ladders":http://www.intellectualwhores.com/masterladder.html (
Make it Last, Track 6)What really hooked me on this album though was Track 1,
Letters. It appealed to a) the musician in me trying to make it big, and b) a desire to taunt all the single women who turned me down:"Sooner or later You will long and when you wake you will seeSooner or later All the songs that make you shake will be by meSooner or later All the throngs of feelings we used to appreciate Will come rushing backWhen you wake you will see" – from
Letters, Track 1All in all - I love this album. The only criticism I really have is that the arrangement is slighty off, in my opinion. Too many of the lower key songs are on the second half of the album, which slows it down excessively if you listen start to finish. Nonetheless this is definitely a "fire and forget" for the play button!--Torch
