BEFORE it was re-recorded and gussied up for their debut album, SILENT ALARM, THIS is what She's Hearing Voices - one of my favorite BLOC PARTY songs - sounded like in its original indie single form.
Maybe it's because I heard it and fell in love with it long before the release of SILENT ALARM, I still MUCH prefer this incarnation of the track to the album release version.

The AFGHAN WHIGS were well known for their love of R&B. The band (may they R.I.P.) were incredible live and one consistent element of their live shows was their performance of what were often very unlikely versions of classic tunes from the 60's.
The WHIGS could take a SUPREMES tune like My World Is Empty Without You, for example, and turn it into something quite sinister, twisted and a bit frightening.
And you gotta love that!
A few of their better known covers made it onto their records, like the attached cover of TLC's Creep, from the HONKY'S LADDER EP (a single from their excellent 1965 album).
The band certainly put their stamp on this tune. And as far as I am concerned, THE AFGHAN WHIGS now OWN this song, having done far more with it that TLC could have ever dreamt of doing.

wow crazy cover. i like it. i know nothing about the band so i didnt know they were so into r&b. props for covering a tlc classic. your tulips are wild, btw!
Róisín Murphy is BRILLIANT!...Period. (uh... is that 10 words? I guess not)
Róisín Murphy - the criminally under-appreciated (but not for much longer, I suspect)lead singer for MOLOKO has just released her second solo effort - OVERPOWERED. And it is SUPERB, but in a very different way than her solo debut - RUBY BLUE (although that album was also extremely innovative and wonderful).
RUBY BLUE, co-masterminded with Matthew Herbert, was very organic. Jazzy... Quirky, Esoteric and comprised primarily of "found" sound sources created in the studio.
OVERPOWERED is HOT DISCO! almost through and through. And it is considerably more commercially appealing. But since it is Róisín Murphy, she defines "disco" in her own very unique way.
Let's just say that it is a very VERY good sign when the b-sides of an album's single releases are every bit as good as any track on the record - and better than 99.99% of anything else out there in current released masquerading as pop music.
MODERN TIMING is one of those B-sides.
