When I was a kid my friend Tony Byrum and I used to go with his Dad to the drag races near our home in Orange County. We loved the rocket cars and the rail-cars that'd go like 300mph and were loud as hell! We also liked it when they crashed. We always hoped there'd one day be a demolition derby in our town but that never materialized as anyone in OC could tell you today. One particular night they had live rock and roll music right on the track during an intermission. This band, Flash Cadillac, was the first real band I ever saw that played what you could really call rock and roll. I guess they were sort of regional, and they played mostly covers but they did it up right. Greasy da's, jeans, leather. The singer (Flash, I assume) wore a satin Elvis suit. They were loud and had that special, pounds in your chest, feeling I got addicted to right away. They rocked Jerry Lee, Elvis, Little Richard and Chuck Berry. It was the first time I'd heard Johnny Be Good ever. Tony and I are still friends and there are no more drag races in the OC!
