Well..I'm not one of those guitars players that grew up with one in the pillow next to me. And about everything I know is self taught (and luck lol!).
I've got a few real life buddies that I either played with or close (and seriously Jerry I had forgotten all about it until you mentioned it...and yeah my first thought was "damn, I DO remember that day...haha).
Yes, some of them were a bit surprised when they got a chance to hear...kinda like I was supposed to have turned out to be a [this section of the post has been removed in order to protect the innocent] or something. Little do they know I promised my mom never to tough that stuff!
Anyways, back to the guitar. I haven't even owned very many. My bass playing bro buys more guitars in 6 months than I have owned in a lifetime!
So I took a mental count. I've owned 8. 4 are currently in the house, one is not mine however, but he's got my other one..so it's still 4. The first I owned got dropped during the loading after a show. Real guitar cases would have been so cool then...well, it cracked. Still playable, but theres just something about going on stage with a cracked hollow body electric. I was playing Rythm at the time so it wasn't like some incredile moment was going to get ruined by my guitar or pieces of it crashing to my feet.
A friend tells me he heard about this guitar for $60 that he saw in the paper. You don't make alot of money as a working musician, but $60 was in the right bracket. So I call and go to pick it up. This Korean lady answers the door and says her husband is selling it but hes not home because he's out playing in a country band. Honestly, I didn't know what to expect next, but shit, I had to see the guitar for sure.
I go in the living room and there is a small Gibson amp and a brown guitar case. Cool! An amp that was way to small to be useful..but maybe I could recover some of the $60 with it.
I pull the guitar out of the case and it's a single pickup cherrywood Gibson Les Paul Jr. Probably a '62.
I really didn't care that it was kinda knicked up and the frets were almost worn to the wood (it didn't actually take that long to get used to the buzz when you it a B chord). It was love at first sight! Even when the G string never would stay in tune and the pickup forced me to crank every amp I ran it into to 10!
Like any relationship..you just get used to shit.
And then one day you sell it.
To some attorney with a big ass German Shepard in the back of his truck for 1/10th of what he was going to get for it.
The dude didn't even play guitar!
