Favourite Albums of the Year

  • The Decemberists - The Crane's Wife - This is far and away the most spectacular album of the year...blending every sound imaginable The Decemberists prove they are the future of music...well done!
  • Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit - Belle and Sebastian seem a little less melancholly and - I actually like it. Very catchy, like a cold you wanna keep.
  • Malajube - Trompe-L'Oeil - They sing in french, I still have no idea what they are saying, but this album from start to end is a great modern rock album.
  • Jose Gonzalez - Veneer - When Ryan Bresee told me of Jose at Blues fest I walked away from him saying to myself, "yeah, sure Ryan i'll run and find that record by a Scandanavian flamenco guitarist who has a penchant for covers"...but Ryan...I was wrong.
  • The Golden Dogs - Big Eye, Little Eye - How many times do I mention the Dogs on this MOG? Great album...I think the only reason it is lower on the list for me is I have heard som many of the songs at their live shows...I am jonesin (sp?) for new dogs!
  • John Legend - Once Again - This is a such a great leap back to the glorious sounds of Motown and particularly Marvin Gaye...great record...don't get thrown off by Kanye.
  • Ok Go - Oh No - Get over the You Tube exposure and listen to this stellar example of well-crafted pop songs alla Weezer and Thrush Hermit...and if the marketing people at capitol have a brain we will all won't be singing "Oh Lately it's so Quiet" in no ti
  • Primal Scream - Riot City Blues - Back in form the Scream Team have (unfortunately) dumped the politics and pay attention to focus purely on the rock n' roll...this is what "Give up but don;t give up" was suppose to be.
  • More or Les - The Truth About rap - My boy Les gives Rap (particularly the gangsta variety) a firm but humourous talking to and explains to the listens what rap really is...often funny and always good.
  • TIE: Amy Millan - Honey From the Tombs & Ron Sexsmith - Time Being - These two singer-songwriter's have given us some lovely songs this year, Ron's album was not as memorable as past outings but an okay Sexsmith album is still gold.

  • KISS by The Peter Criss Solo Album

I've always liked the idea of having a giant sized ego. With that said, I like the idea of walking into a room to your very own theme song.Ego or not, surely I am not the only one who has considered this option. So here are some ideas...Green Onions by Booker T & The MGs- groovy, but does it say enough?Down Payment Blues by AC/DC- As much as I might have wanted to be Bon Scott when I was 21 the...

Dead is the drunkest that you can get.

Well. The Rheostatics. Canada's stalwart purveyors of proggy-inspired-sonic Canadian delusions are breaking up after what? thrity years of pushing the limits of a sound that is remarkably orginal and remarkably Canadian (songs about Wendall Clark, Saskatchewan & Regina). Over their career the band has hardly changed. Two changes on drums (in CDN hockey fashion they traded drummers in the mi...

Favourite Albums of the Year

  • The Who at Scotia Bank Place - This show was helped by the fourth row seats we had...and hell, I was watching The Who rock it!
  • The Constantines at The Capital. OH MY...they are soooo good.
  • The Golden Dogs at Maverick's - These guys are so fun, and the newest line up is the best yet...what is up with Radio? Play these guys and go see them.
  • Xavier Rudd at the Bronson Centre. There was a whole lot of love and rhythm in the Bronson on that cold November night...beautiful.
  • TIE - Son Volt and Wilco both at Bluesfest...hard to call which was a better show...my heart was there for Wilco, but when I checked out Son Volt a few nights prior I was blown away. Two great shows by two old rivals.
  • Amy Millan, Ron Sexsmith and Mike Evin at The Ottawa Folk Festival three of Canada's stellar songwriter's sharing the stage...what a lovely hour of music...and Mike Evin stood strong with ron and Amy right there.
  • The Dears, malajube, Golden dogs & Clothes Make the Man - The Last Tulip show (ever?) was a stunner...malajube were arguably my favourite CDN rockers this year and their live show is great!
  • Coldplay at Scotiabank Place - I am not really a Coldplay fan, but they put on an incredible show at the Bank and despite possibly lossing some street cred for putting this high on the list if you were not there...shut up.
  • Death Cab for Cutie & Ted Leo & the Pharmacists at Civic Centre - First off the sound was brilliant, secondly the audience was hilarious...mention of the word Calgary and they cheered like banshees (I cried with laughter) you people are hilarious and help
  • Jurassic 5 at Capital - fun show with some positive vibe in da house...kinda felt bad that joe and I didn't wave our hands in the air (like we just don't care)
  • Other notable live shows...The Machines New Year's Eve, calexico at Bluesfest, Sam Roberts and Malajube at Capital, Wintersleep at Barrymore's and The Shout out out outs at Zaphods
