I bought this album the moment I could get home and log online. I had switched to the local classical music station based out of DC as nothing else was on of interest. After some so-so Chopin, a pleasantly delicate piano solo began that was strangely familiar, so familiar that it beguiled me. When I had the sudden realization of what it actually was, I literally had to pull over into the breakdown lane and park my car in disbelief. It was none other than "Fake Plastic Trees" done as a piano concerto piece! I patiently waited for the DJ to roll the credits so I knew who it was and what this was from. Christopher O'Riley it turns out. I was not surprised. For years, he has been running one of the most innovative music programs at the University of Rhode Island, thumbing his nose at stodgy convention with work such as this. Very often, the fatal flaw in all tribute albums is the propensity to show diverse artists doing the work of one particular artist. The quality can range from rarely brilliant to mostly pedestrian if not painfully disappointing. By re-imaginging the seminal indie band in this format, O'Riley adds a new dimension to their music. Some of my peers, myself included, have a love/hate relationship with Radiohead. Some of the songs I personally could not stand to listen to now become palatable. Some of those I liked now become utterly transformed into something amazing. Decide for yourself which in this unique and audacious work!
