New Counting Crows release date.

Woah, more info on the forthcoming Counting Crows record. For starters, the release date according to their website is March 25th!

But they've also revealed the album cover and posted 2 free songs for download. "1492" is a rocker (maybe the biggest rocker from them yet), while "When I dream of Michelangelo" is a softer song with some classic Crows' phrases.

New Counting Crows!

Check out this new Counting Crows track from their upcoming album.

This is the most energetic and exciting the band has ever sounded. I feel like I did the first time I heard "Angels of the Silences" from Recovering the Satellites right before it was released.

This sounds like the band I always wanted them to be.

Friday Anthem?

I'm not sure there is a better Friday Anthem than Rage Against The Machine's Killing in the Name. Cranking that up gives me so much power at work as the week drags to a close.

Feel free to rock along with me thanks to that little audio icon above!

I wonder if the iTunes API could have or does have an interface for tracking volume information with songs as you listen. It would be cool as heck to see a graph or rating that showed which songs you "turn up to 11"!

Leonard Cohen: Live, BBC Television Theatre, London, Summer 1968

"Vintage Leonard Cohen. Live at the BBC Television Theatre (aka Paris Theare), London, Summer 1968, playing songs from the essential 1967 debut, Songs of Leonard Cohen. Set broadcast on 31 August 1968. Really good quality, and nothing beats Cohen as a folkie. Must have for all Cohen fans."

So much rocking

This isn't so much a review of the new Decemberists record as it a report on just how rocking track #2, The Island: Come & See/The Landlord's Daughter/You'll Not Feel The Drowning is. I mean seriously. Sure his twelve minute song has a story line to rival the great Mariner's Revenge, but the the reason my head rocks so hard is the fantastic Jethro Tull -style organ/synth interlude in the center. I actually laughed the first time I heard it. So. clever.

I'm also really digging track #3, Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then) if for nothing else than Laura's charming vocal. She's really the perfect match for Colin's personable pipes.

Great CD - check it out. The Decemberists are one of those rare bands that get better with every release.

Music Snobs

Jason Fry's article, "Add Easy Listening To Guilty Pleasures Of Digital Downloads" on WSJ.com really sums up something I've been thinking a bit about lately. With so many web apps recording our every move online, how does that effect our behavior?

I've got Mog.com and Last.fm keeping track of every single song I listen to and displaying that info on their websites and on my own via RSS. Digg.com and Del.icio.us know what links I like. Amazon.com and countless other retailers know what I've bought, what I own, and what I've been shopping for.

I have to admit, especially with music, it sometimes alters my choices. I know I'll sometimes let a song finish on my iPod even though I may not really want to hear at the moment so that I'm sure to get "credit" for listening to it. I can't put my finger on it but it often boils down to making sure my favorites are properly "represented" on my profile. Silly, I know. And while I haven't gone to the lengths to which Fry has admitted (I've never removed anything from my history) I have gone to some trouble on occasion to ensure that Avril Lavigne or maybe Coverdale/Page don't show up as the last entries on my "Recently Played" lists. You know, if I listen to a little Interpol that makes up for it, right?

So how about you? Does having your music "taste" on display change what you listen to?

M. Ward on NPR's All Songs Considered

First off, if you're a mogger and you don't listen to the All Songs Considered podcast from NPR you're missing out. And if you're a fan of M. Ward you're in for a treat this week as Matt joins host Bob Boilen for an entire show dedicated to the artist. They discuss his influences and play some tracks together. Great show!

Oh and I realize that totally sounds like some dumb commercial for the show, but I'm just a fan of both M.Ward and ASC.

Sleater-Kinney: Let's Call it Done

Man, what a bummer. Apparently Sleater-Kinney has decided to call it quits. They are one of my favorite bands - I feel fortunate to have managed to see them live a few years ago. They'll be missed.

This is surprising to me as The Woods was in my opinion some of their best work - I really thought they were on an upswing.

From http://www.sleater-kinney.com/:

After eleven years as a band, Sleater-Kinney have decided to go on indefinite hiatus. The upcoming summer shows will be our last. As of now, there are no plans for future tours or recordings.

We feel lucky to have had the support of many wonderful people over the years. We want to thank everyone who has worked with us, written kind words about us, performed with us, and inspired us.

But mostly we want to extend our gratitude to our amazing fans. You have been a part of our story from the beginning. We could not have made our music without your enthusiasm, passion, and loyalty. It is you who have made the entire journey worthwhile.

With love and thanks,
Sleater-Kinney

Ok, so I spotted this promo image showing Jim James of My Morning Jacket on stage with Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. It is common for PJ to play a show closer or two with an opening band or special guest - I've seen them do that countless times - and MMJ opened the first leg of Pearl Jam's tour this summer. Now I just need to figure out which show and what song. Anyone?

UPDATE: Thanks to the guys over on the MMJ forum, I found out it is a cover of The Band's It Makes No Difference. Awesome! (Oh and it is Ed joining MMJ - not the other way around.)

Excellent interview with Thom Yorke of Radiohead

All Messed Up

This is a really great look into the agony Yorke seems to feel about the crisis of our global environment and the powerlessness that many of us feel. In particular he weighs in on what many consider the hypocrisy of the band being extremely environmentally conscious but then staging huge stadium rock shows which use tons of energy.

Personally, I can really identify with much of this:

When Yorke feels things, he really feels them. He’s vigorous and passionate, and far from the dour grump he’s often portrayed as. It’s just that he gets ultra-stressed by things that many of us choose to ignore, and melodrama can ensue.

I often feel the same way despairing over issues that I feel so sad, so strongly about. I can be so emotionally overwhelmed by the oppressive weight of these issues and feeling so alone as I watch my fellow man zip through life apathetically. Really I think apathy is the worst of the world’s evil right now - if more people cared about eachother and our world and our future, I’m certain things would be so much better.

Just starting out

Well I've been playing around with Mog here for the past few days. I'm a big fan of Last.fm so naturally this has some appeal for me. It seems to be a nice combination of features from MySpace and Last.fm. It hasn't been without it's bumps, though...for instance I still haven't completed an index of my home computer - it will complete a few percent each evening and the control panel seems to crash on occasion. I suppose that is to be expected, but the index seems to be preventing any reliable submission of my tracks both as I listen and ones the come off my iPod. That said, I'm still looking forward seeing my weekly and recent tracks being reflected more consistently - I actually filled in my weekly list manually using Last.fm data this time until the system catches up.

Also, what the heck is the mog meter? Mine is at the lowest setting but I can't seem to figure out how to get to "blazing" like so many people have - even people with no content on their profile seem to have been able to achieve this lofty status. Can anyone explain it?

Now to figure out how folks are adding custom content to their pages and to see if I can force some CSS into this so I can make it look how I want...
