We tried for the last three months to post something but we had technical issues with MOG that kept us from making our own posts. It appears that MOG Support figured out the glitch so The Time Machine Crew has some catching up to do. Here's our annual list that we had hoped to post at the end of the year. Better late than never.
It's the last day of 2009 and we decided to look back at our most played albums on the air for 2009. Everyone argued over a top ten or one hundred list because there were so many choices. We decided that instead of bickering over different music choices (and trust us...this is what we love to do...bicker about movies and music), we would present to you our most played albums on the air last year. This way there was no wiggle room for critical favorites. The funny part was that after the list was completed, everyone gathered around, smiled and agreed that these albums did fill our hearts and souls musically and that's all that matters in the end.

Mike Viola's album "Lurch" from 2007 along with "She's About To Cross My Mind" from The Red Button, Ken Sharp's "Sonic Crayons" and Mandy Moore's "Wild Hope" from the same year continued with heavy spins into 2009. Still rolling along after over three years in heavy rotation was 2006's "Under The Covers Vol. 1" from Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs which continued to get massive airplay into 2009 just in time to welcome "Under The Covers Vol. 2". The monster album of all airplay from the previous year was the double album "Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart" from Rachael Yamagata and her songs dominated the airplay as did Anya Marina's "Slow & Steady Seduction: Phase II" which we didn't realize at the time was not officially released until the following year and we were spinning an advance promo copy like the happy music campers that we are. Kelly Jones and her third album "SheBANG!" from 2008 also gave The Time Machine Crew plenty of musical joy on the airwaves into 2009. The other two remaining albums from 2008 that continued to get heavy airplay throughout 2009 on The Time Machine were the many eclectic arrangements from producer Robin Danar's album "Altered States" (with artists as varied as Quincy Coleman, Pete Yorn & Kinky, Jim Bianco, Rachael Yamagata, Inara George, Julianna Raye, Jesca Hoop, Lisa Loeb with Steve Reynolds and other talented artists that make this album a must have for any music lover) and She & Him's "Volume One" from M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel. We've been spinning their latest singles "Thieves" and "In The Sun" that have us looking forward to the upcoming March release of "Volume Two" from She & Him.

2009 also ended up as "The Year of Shave Ice" for The Time Machine Crew...but that's a story for another time.

The albums below are actual titles that were released in 2009 that dominated our playlists.

2008 had nearly seventy albums so with that number cut in half for 2009, it's a large number of spins for thirty-two albums in no particular ranking outside of the first five choices.

Let's kick it off with the five most played albums hands down over any other this past year on "The Time Machine"...we were pleased to see that these albums all tied at the number one spot.

Now that y'all are caught up, I see I've got some listenin' to do. One of the differentest 2009 lists I saw..and I saw quite a few.
Some rockin' numbers and some heartfelt songs from a few talented singer-songwriters plus three musical acts from the island of Maui in Hawaii. We definitely had some fun last year on the radio airwaves. There was so much music last year that this list barely scratches the surface. Thanks Cody for checking it out.

Quite a mitzvah to help guide us to the good stuff, you did. That it's time-tested adds to its allure. I have to admit that Marshall Crenshaw is not terra incognita to me, at least his earlier oeuvre, but that makes his latest more of a must-listen. The overall success ratio of your posts, meaning those I hooked onto as they flew past, fuels my trust in you crew.
Is that Glenn Tillbrook, from the band Squeeze, with a solo album as the Fluffers? I'm not sure which to do more: giggle at the bandname or scramble to go hear the music. :)
Spike - Wow. Never had the word mitzvah tossed at our broadcast. Thank you for the kind words.
Dale - Yes indeed, that is the same Glenn Tilbrook. Go ahead and giggle. We probably played the album on the air so much last year just so that we could say "fluffer" and get away with it. *lol
Great list -- love that Tilbrook, Crenshaw, Birch, and McCarley made your list -- I am going to check out some of the others I have not heard. Thanks!
Funoka - Diane Birch put out a wonderful album didn't she? Looking forward to her next album as well as Erin McCarley. Glenn Tilbrook's album is fun and Marshall Crenshaw is full of dreamy reflection in sound and lyrics. Four completely different albums from last year that are very cool musically.

Glenn Tibrook - "Product" (live on the Dusty Wright Show)
Erin McCarley - "Sticky-Sweet"
Erin McCarley - "Love, Save The Empty"
Marshall Crenshaw - "Someday, Someway" (live from 2007)
Diane Birch - "Nothing But A Miracle" (live on "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson")
Thanks again for this great list. I was able to pick up a number of the artists that I had not heard on eMusic. I really am enjoying Anny Celsi. Maxi Dunn, and Shuyler Fisk.
I thought this would be a good test for Spotify since I was unfamiliar with most of these artists. I got about a 60% hit rate and about 1/2 of those got the artist but didn't have the latest album - ie, the one you rated. This seems a pretty appalling rate for both artists and public. I'm curious - are the records you play available for purchase in your local record shops?
I'm sure I'll make some great discoveries in this list - you've already reminded to pick up some thatI'd forgotten about (Brendan Benson for instance).
It may depend on where you live. Unfortunately, our neck of the woods has turned into a ghost town for purchasing albums the old fashioned way. Both Barnes & Noble and Borders stock less than a handful of these albums (even superstar acts don't get stocked - there's a true sign of the times). It's been odd to even see signs behind the counter promoting upcoming releases and then the store doesn't have the CDs when they are released. Sadly, we have to order them from the store clerk and some of these acts are on major labels or part of the distribution pipeline of the majors. The CDs usually arrive in a week or two but they can be ordered.
That being said, the majority of these albums should be found at online sites like Amazon without any problem. A few of them can also be found on the artists websites. It shouldn't be too hard as most of these acts have their music in the background at dining establishments like The Outback Steakhouse so the music has been available to mainstream satellite radio programmers for the last year.
Jason Falkner's album is an import from Japan so it may be pricey. The album may have been released domestic in America in recent weeks or it's about to come out.
