MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Artist:
Album: New Day
Track: Nobody Is
(1016)

We're not really sure why both albums from A&M Records act Airwaves have never been released on CD. Both "New Day" from 1977 and "Next Stop" from 1979 are well produced albums filled with extremely catchy songs. We get nervous in the studio playing these precious albums on the FM dial worried that they will get scratched and will be hard to replace. The trio was made up of talented guitarist Ray Martinez (from the early 70's band Spring), bassist and keyboardist John David (Love Sculpture, Dave Edmunds - yes...that's John on Dave Edmunds' monster hit "I Hear You Knockin') and drummer Dave Charles. John is considered the third most successful Welsh songwriter ever with his songs being covered by over two hundred artists worldwide. John sings lead on this song while Ray whips his guitar into a frenzy to the pounding skins of Dave's drums. Here for your listening pleasure is "Nobody Is" recorded in Wales and produced by Pat Moran with Dave Charles as assistant engineer.

*We were too lazy to take a photograph of the album cover to post online so you have a photo instead of The Time Machine's hosts Summer Blue and Michael McCartney. It takes an online detective to find photographs of the band Airwaves back in the seventies.

It's so delightfully upbeat. I like it! Never heard of them.

why not copy the records so you don't have to play the originals? you could have the album on CD, mp3 or tape.

Yeah, why not? Are the other cuts on the album as supremely beautiful as "Nobody Is"? If so, I'm salivating. Maybe there are tracks I have that you'd want me to copy for you in return. Even better, I could get my boys to lean a little on Herb and Burt to reissue it and avoid unfortunate things happening to them.

Tee-hee!

Well...you have to know that Herb is pretty much out of the picture after he and his partner Jerry sold the record label. One of the best indies back in the day.

We do copy material onto CD from vinyl which does take some effort but in the long run it would be so much better if it was professionally released without all of our turntable noise and vinyl surface noise. *lol

Believe it or not but at all five radio stations that we carry our show on...not a single one of them has a cassette or reel to reel in the studios. All five of them also do not broadcast MP3s. Only WAV. files and CDs. They are all live 24/7 so you have nothing but DJs opening and closing CD players all day and all night with the occasional spin on a turntable or two. Yes. We are radio dinosaurs.

We'll see if we can post some more of Airwaves. Both of the albums are first rate. :=)

Don't store-bought CDs have tracks that are AIFF format? I just checked, and it seems to me that they do. I copy tracks from CDs onto my hard drive as aif, and then burn them onto blank CDs as aif. So why can't you play home-burnt CDs on your show?

You misunderstood. We do burn vinyl onto compact discs from vinyl. The only problem is that even on the FM dial you can tell that it's from vinyl (which does sound cool but with surface noise or the occasional skip it does stand out from CDs with pristine sound). It does take time to make the transfer from vinyl to CD and when you look at the thousands of record albums in the studio's library that haven't made into the digital world - it does become a bit overwhelming. *lol

Must admit that there is a musical charm when hearing the vinyl crackling over the airwaves. :=)

Not sure if AIFF files are on CDs or not. We use PCs. Are you on a Mac? Even when major labels send us AIFF files to download for airplay they don't sound as full as the CD when it arrives (whenever we rip those - it always ends up as a WAV. file and sounds like the CD track). There appears to be some kind of compression on those AIFF files. A lot on the high side and not much bass. Has anyone else run into this? It could be the equipment (hardware and software) at the various radio stations but they are also different brands so based on that limited info...it does appear that they are not the same in audio quality. We had a guest artist come in on Friday's show and she played material (not hers music but major label acts) off of her iPod and you could really tell the difference between the CDs that are normally played on the air and her various wimpy sounding iTunes files and MP3 files. Yikes! Fine for AM but on FM...really noticable.

Again...could be totally offbase about the AIFF file.

I may be offbase also. I trust your ears. When I insert a store-bought CD into my Mac and double-click it open, each track is AIFF. Maybe that's different and better than aif. Anytime one does anything to a music file, it degrades it slightly.

Somehow I missed this one in 1977. Not sure why, as I was a 14 year old worshipper of AOR (and some pop) radio at the time. Anyway, cool tune.

whoo hoo you got me time machine! Never heard of this group at all....and this track is rockin'! I have to agree with ya on the mp3 sound...it just isn't up where it should be... but that said whatever you did with converting this song sounds great.... so you can go ahead and do up the rest of the record as well for us..ha! I notice when you put up mp3's on mog the volume increases and some of the frequencies actually sound a bit better than when you play them through a media player. I could be way off track or need my ears adjusted but that's the way i get it some of the time.

Remember copying records to casette tape so you wouldn't wear out the vinyl? Now... those were the days huh?

No photos found...i'm sorry.... i looked everywhere. just the album cover which you already have...I love the impossible search so you never know...i might be back. Also i just played this gem of a song you posted four times in a row (cause it's so damn fine!) and if that red button doesn't start moving up in the count department soon... (growls like yosemite sam)

Always thought of Airwaves as sort of the United Kingdom equivalent of America's Toto - multi-talented session guys creating cool songs and vibes.  Always wondered why A&M didn't promote them more.  It may have been a losing battle while Punk and New Wave duked it out with Disco.  It seemed that if Nigel Olsson and Ian Matthews could get hits on Top 40 stations back then...why wasn't there room for Airwaves?
