i saw his "secret surprise show" at the basement on saturday night. he may be known to most as a raconteur - but i most fondly remember his detroit days and his short stint in the waxwings... groovy psych. what a really eclectic artist brendan benson.
A bit surprised by the instrumentation on this track. No strings were on the Alternative To Love CD I own. But it works.
The strings work well. I lilke the way they build into the bridge and chorus, and that heart-breaking sound when "if she throws her heart away I'll be there on garbage day" comes. And the chord progression and 'I heard it though the grapevine' drums out of that into "I don't mind if all the neighbors can see me". The lyrics are very heart-felt, with strong images that are delivered by a great musical hook.
I like it! Hey, Mikey! This is my introduction to this artist. Thanks.
I love the song with the lines "face it, you're not John Lennon". I saw that in a review of him and immediately bought the album. No surprise he's a compadre of Jack White - smart, loves good pop/rock, and from the sound of this track, has finally got a production sound worthy of his talent. (Yours must be a great station to listen to.)
this level of songwriting, production, musicianship, and careerism is a rare thing indeed these days and should be celebrated
the man is hitting his stride
woo hoo!
