MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Artist:

It's been five years since Liz Phair's self titled album on Capitol was released and although a lot of long time fans were put off by the album because it appeared to be overly commercial, we embraced the fun of the wonderful pop that Lauren Christy, Graham Edwards and Scott Spock of The Matrix brought to the table as produceres and co-songwriters with Liz.

We do have a bit of fun playing a censored version of "H.W.C." filled with numerous bleeps but the song is so catchy that we can't help ourselves. We didn't want to unleash that song upon you as a first listen. Instead here is a song that always get our studio line ringing with a chuckle from a listener or two. The lyrical content is tight and the Power Pop sound keeps this record still sounding fresh.

We understand that there are many fans of Liz Phair who dislike this album and her follow-up with a passion but forgive us for enjoying her recent musical journeys. Here now is "Favorite" from 2003.

Spike says:

It's beautiful to me, because I can separate from it the lyrics' awkward metaphor (or is it a simile?). The recording deserves our support.

forgiveness for enjoying music? never ask for it i say....please don't say that again okay? favorite is a good song... nuthin' wrong with it. you gotta wait to find out what the heck it is she's singin' about and if by then you aren't laughing get your funnybone checked. no not that funnybone fools! sure the "new" liz phair recordings are a departure from her earlier stuff but the way she goes about writing is still there it's just not right up in your face anymore. i get it..what she is doing....put it out there with a bit more pop polish and omigod there are a bajillion more people who see who liz phair is. she just cleaned it up a bit ...the dirt is there still just beneath the surface..try and play f%^&k and run on the radio? maybe an indie station could put it up late nite. artists like phair should evolve/mature...me i like it all..though i do have a tendency to lean towards her brilliant "Exile in Guyville" songs like divorce song and flower are just too much of a good thing not to want hear over and over. maybe it is the brazen way she put the words down that got my attention in the first place, but her voice and the song structures she builds should be referred to as compositions or pieces. they are a welcome escape from the gaga that gets piped through airwaves day in day out. long live the timemachine for switchin' it up a bit and playing new music outside the box. wait a minute .....there is no box ...... and this should be heard! michael mccartney is one heck of a good human i tellya....truth to you.
