WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Video explains the world's most important 6-sec drum loop

Posted over 2 years ago
I've not created a new post of late, but thought this video was an essential part of music history, especially for fans of electronic music. Ever heard of the 'Amen Break'? I had, but had no idea about it's amazing history.

Enjoy

  1. darmuzz says I know absolutely nothing about percussion or even what a break is, so that was extremely educational! Kudos to the Winstons... sounds like they need some "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" type exposure!

  2. Girlcrawl says 'Essential' history indeed; this is terribly interesting info - must look at The Winstons, and I remember when NWA & Squarepusher dropped those releases! A toast to the six second Amen break, and thanks for posting.

  3. darmuzz says I like the versions from 97 and 98 that the narrator thought were excessive, experimental, unrecognizable, etc.

  6. Marigold says Thanks for getting that history lesson to me. I never would have found it otherwise. I will never hear the Amen Break the same. I am sure I will notice it more as well. Thanks.

  7. The Serenity Vortex says YaY!! Glad you all liked it. So who is going to be the first person here to be out somewhere, hear the Amen Break in some music, open your mouth and say: "Ah, the Amen Break, did you know that . . . ", I've got some great musical mates who will love that bit of history trivia. Darmuzz, I know what you mean. Sampling something and warping it, bending it, to do your evil bidding is so satisfying, a true art form in my opinion.

  8. Cody B says Nice one, Boy Flood. Seems like once every 2 months or so..there's an Amen break post. The secret ain't gonna be a secret much longer! I don't know if anybody's ever posted the Winstons Song in total, so here it is..

  9. The Serenity Vortex says Nice one Cody B. I actually love this track, and if I'm not mistaken, I think other parts of this track have been sampled and used in other music. I love the fact that The Winstons don't mind it being sampled so much. They are in my mind more in touch with the music scene than other musicians who get so upset about their stuff being sampled.. . .

  10. Cody B says As far as sampling, I like the idea of letting it go for free up front, with the sampled artist getting a little something if the song makes a lot of dough. If nothing else an acknowledgement would be cool. What's your take on that?

  11. Marigold says Cody B. I really appreciate you posting the whole song. I remember singing the actual church hymm song in church as a kid. thanks.

  12. The Serenity Vortex says Cody B: 100% with you dude!! That's exactly the way it should be. I would be flattered if someone wanted to use my stuff that way. I would shout about it rather than try to bury it.
