Randy Newman talks to MOG about Harps & Angels, Dick Cheney and Roman Polanski

Terry Staunton writes: "When Randy Newman finally picked up an Oscar in 2002, after 15 previously unsuccessful nominations, the biggest cheers were not from the A-list audience in sharp tuxes, shimmering gowns and borrowed bling. His long-overdue recognition, courtesy of the Best Song award for If I Didn't Have You, from the soundtrack of Monsters Inc, provoked overwhelming whoops from the orchestra pit, which he considers the greatest compliment of all."

Artist: Cold War Kids

Album: Loyalty to Loyalty

Fri Sept 26 2008

The Line Of Best Fit: "The bluesy Californian quartet are back with their long awaited album, which promises ample mounts of wailing and a dash of blues soaked misery. But was it worth the wait?"

HeadphoneCommute: "With his twelfth album, Tom Jenkinson takes even a further departure from his staple Squarepuher sound of broken beats atop slapped bass and twisted triggers of the Amen Break. Warp's own store, Warpmart, categorizes the album as "Drum and Bass / Breakcore / Electronica", but I assure you, nothing could be further from the truth!"

Artist: Blitzen Trapper

Album: Furr

HearYa: Indie Music Blog: "Blitzen Trapper are a potpourri of all things good in music. Furr is like a big bowl of The Beatles, Pavement, Dylan, Waylon Jennings, Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, and The Grateful Dead all mixed together for an end result that smells magnificent. The album kicks off with "Sleepytime In The Western World," a song that's impossible not to compare to Wilco."

The 405: "With the amount of promo's we get sent on a daily basis it's often a skill in itself to try and not kill yourself when you read a press release because often labels/pr people will bend the truth in order to get you to listen to their band. This is fair enough I guess but on the odd occasion they won't lie at all because, put quite simply, they won't need to."

Misheard Lyrics

Sun Sept 28 2008

scottyhons: "So I was listening to a cover version of a very, very well known song today (I'm embarassed to say what it was, but no, it wasn't the Nirvana song attached to this post) and decided to look up the lyrics. I had always heard a few words one way, but the covering artist pronounced the words in a way that made me unsure of what the correct lyrics were. Sure enough, although I had heard the song hundreds of times, I was way off on a few vital words."

Radio

Thu Sept 25 2008

Eric Hancock: "Back in the 80s, when I was a troubled youth attending high school in New Jersey, night time radio was far more interesting than it is now. Before the internets, before the explosion of channels on cable, radio had some good stuff. And some of it happened at night. I remember discovering a show on WXRK one night. Jimmy Fink hosted it."

Our Name is Chrome-oooo (Interview with Dave 1)

Fri Sept 26 2008

The Tape: "So I might have mentioned in my Lollapalooza review that I ran into Dave 1 from Chromeo in Chicago's O'Hare airport, but maybe I didn't. Anyways, he was a really nice guy and I eventually contacted him about an interview, and that's what I'm typing about now. We asked him a few questions pertaining to his band, and a few questions having nothing to do with the band."

Monolith Music Festival: Moggers Meet, Dig the Sounds

Tue Sept 23 2008

Dale: "In many ways, I appear to be the picture of adult responsibility. I've been married for about as long as our MOGger of the week (congrats Jules) has been alive, and have three kids. I hold down a steady job, often working long hours. I try very hard to remember friends' birthdays and special occasions. I regularly attend worship services and work at church frequently. I've even been a Scoutmaster, for Pete's sake. In many ways though, I'm just a big kid."

20 Questions with Sea Wolf

Thur Sept 25 2008

The Line Of Best Fit: "Perfect indie pop with a hint of sadness. That's how I'd describe Sea Wolf's particular furrow. We caught up with Alex Church Brown, the main man, to find out what he's all about. Their debut album was released back in August, but they've got a bright and shiney new single coming out this week!"

Mogger of the Week

Say hello to Elton Noon!

http://mog.com/Elton_Noon

Once a small-town guy who wasn't very into music, aside from "listening to Joni Mitchell and Anne Murray with my parents as a kid," Elton Noon says it was a performance by Björk at an opera house on her Vespertine tour that was the inspiration for his current music obsession.

Elton Noon, recent art school graduate, explains, "At the time I was thinking loads about slow and conceptual ideas and her show with pulsating sounds from around the opera house really connected to me at the time. Seeing Matmos as Björk's supporting band opened my eyes to a whole new world of conceptual and alternative music that I otherwise wouldn't have learned about."

Upon moving to the UK five years ago he found himself immersed in "grimey and dark culture: Late night shows, wild parties, raves, club culture." It was then that he discovered Joy Division's album Still and it marked another pivotal point in his music listening.

Discussing music "with people who don't take it too seriously" and taking people up on suggestions is one thing Elton enjoys. He thinks MOG is great because of the "genuine feeling of love and sincerity that you don't find on any other music/social networking sites. People are genuinely interested in reading [one's] posts and are always there to suggest something new or something to expand upon."

Stop by and say hi to Elton Noon!
