Reflecting on GZA/The Genius & His Latest Album, "Pro Tools"
Mogger Dead C writes: GZA/The Genius, from the infamous Wu-Tang Clan, is still on tour and his latest album, Pro Tools (Baby Grande), is still fairly new, but the particular performance that I saw took place on the 26th of last month, and I was seriously beginning to wonder if the topic was getting stale. It's true, I almost abandoned this review until I remembered this quote that I had read from GZA himself: "I'm not one to write a rhyme in thirty minutes." Read More.

Album Reviews of the Week
Artist: Jenny Lewis
Album: Acid Tongue
Sun Sept 21 2008
Joxley: "Listening to Rilo Kiley's Under the Blacklight, it would be easy to assume Jenny Lewis was an out and out city girl - it is a record that plunges through the grime and detritus of the sprawling metropolis, unearthing players, pornstars and countless other villains. Yet Lewis' solo albums, the second of which sees release Stateside on Tuesday, are a much more Mid-Western affair."

Artist: Brazilian Girls
Album: New York City
Wed Sept 17 2008
pinkertonwasbetter: "Remember the time you discovered Pop Rocks as a kid - the first time you tore open the package, emptied out all those colorful sugar crystals into your hand, threw your head back and opened your mouth not knowing what to expect? Remember how wide your eyes got as the tiny crystals bounced around the inside of your mouth, and the tingling, sweet sensation on your tongue? I liken my first time listening to Brazilian Girls to eating Pop-Rocks: fun, pleasantly surprising, and deliciously entertaining."

Artist: All Shall Perish
Album: Awaken the Dreamers
Tue Sept 16 2008
MetalSucks: "As you've probably heard, All Shall Perish's new album, Awaken the Dreamers, is slower and less brutal than its predecessors, Hate.Malice.Revenge and The Price of Existence - but it's less brutal the way getting punched in the face is ultimately somewhat preferable to getting kicked in the nuts."

Artist: Ray LaMontagne
Album: Gossip in the Grain
Wed Sept 17 2008
incurablyerin: "Ray LaMontagne is an artist with a "new sound" in the grand scheme of music today. Well, a new sound that consists of a cauldron full of "old sounds" — which seems to be a popular trend so far in century number twenty-one (see: Amy Winehouse, Madeleine Peyroux, Andrew Bird, Joss Stone, et al)."

Artist: Chad Van Gaalen
Album: Soft Airplane
Tiny Mix Tapes: "Three albums into an already fruitful and prolific career, Chad VanGaalen's Soft Airplane is easily the strongest, most direct collection of tunes the Calgary, Alberta songwriter has put to tape. His two previous Sub Pop releases, 2004's Infiniheart and 2006's Skelliconnection, were wonderful, sprawling home-recorded documents, filled with the sort of simple emotive introspection that any genuine singer-songwriter can employ with ease."

Conor Oberst and Jenny Lewis in Nashville!
Mon Sept 22 2008
bohemianlullaby: "I'll start with the first of many 'almosts' of my interesting trip to Nashville for the Jenny Lewis and Conor Oberst show. I was ten seconds away from meeting both Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice. Now before you jump to conclusions and assume I was stalking them, you should know that summer eyes and I were innocently driving around downtown Nashville, trying to find a Wal-Mart. As we cruised by the river, she pointed out a couple on the walk. She was a petite redhead with a flowy hippie dress on, and he, clad in an uber-tight black shirt, had mousy brown hair almost as long as hers. Complete with matching Ray-Bans."

Tiny Mix Tapes: "The guys in Mogwai thought we had a phone interview. I stood outside of Portland's Roseland Theater on a glorious late summer day, dialing the number the tour manager had given me. Someone answered, and I told them I was there to interview Mogwai."

Our Band Could Be Your Life - Independent Music Fans Must Read This
Wed Sept 17 2008
Eric5776: "Rarely do I read a book that strikes me enough to MOG about, let alone that becomes such a staple to a genre of music that it deserves a plug on MOG. The book, Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes From The American Indie Underground, 1981-1991 by Michael Azerrad is a fantastic archive of 13 of the most important independent acts of the 80's."

Sat Sept 19 2008
Groon: "So, after weeks of cajoling and pleading with Chris/Control/I Am/Without Guile to send me my booty, I eventually forgot all about it. I turned my attention instead to running my new, vast kingdom, enforcing new and stringent music rules upon the masses, and fathering hordes of li'l vikings who will won day grow up and vanquish even more of my enemies."

TRL is Done; R. Kelly is Still an Idiot
Thu Sept 18 2008
The Round Table: "So when the news that TRL was (finally!) being canceled, I knew my RT topic for the week was on lock. Then, I'm watching TV last night and see a teaser from an interview Toure, pop culture correspondent for BET, conducted with the recently (read: wrongly) acquitted R.Kelly."

About the Flobots
Thu Sept 18 2008
contemporary: "I remember first hearing "Handlebars" while listening to the radio in my car. I've mostly given up on radio but that day I didn't feel like listening to any of the CD's that I had with me. So the DJ introduced "Handlebars," saying that it was a new song by a band from Colorado that had won a local radio contest."

Girl Talk, The Death Set, Passion Pit Live in Boston
Sat Sept 20 2008
Enough Cowbell: "In between each of their songs The Death Set had samples of popular songs played over the PA. Artists such as Lil' Wayne and MIA were broadcast to the audience to keep everyone's energy up while the band retools for their next song. One fellow concert goer, fed up with The Death Set and itching for Girl Talk managed to shout in a fit of frustration a seemingly clever quote - at least by his own estimation. He yelled, for all to hear: 'Play your own music!' Sublime irony."

My Meeting with Emo Indie God Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie
Thu Sept 18 2008
cyberred: "The plan was, that I take three days off to head down to Singapore and if there was a press conference, I would hop in and at least bow down to the greatness that is Death Cab For Cutie from afar. Dawn then shared that we might get an interview and I ran by the boss if they wanted the story. I got the green flag and I was down on the Sunday, 10 Aug."

Your Vegas: "Yo everyone! Coyle here. I don't usually do these, but what the hell, here we go. Hope you're all having a delicious Thursday! We're back recording new songs! All very exciting and they're sounding rather splendid if I do say so myself. I'm taking a 30-minute break from writing lyrics. So yesterday saw us head down to Washington, DC to the George Washington University to hit the collage radio station WRGW."

Mogger of the Week
Say hello to Jules09!
Jules09 may still be in high school, but aided by the boring drone of radio music and the need for real music, she's already gone through many phases of music obsession. When she was thirteen years old she says, "I raided my dad's collection of CDs and took The Who's Ultimate Collection. It blew my mind, it was like nothing I had ever heard before. This was music of substance!" From there she discovered The Clash, and as "a suburban, St. Louis kid" she made London Calling the soundtrack to her life.
"The best band I found out about through MOG, hands down, is The National," says Jules09. "You know [how] in 'Garden State' Natalie Portman said that The Shins would change your life? She was wrong. The National will." She refers to Boxer and Alligator as "classic" albums. For her "straight-up rock and roll" she looks no further than Kings of Leon. "Their lyrics are what you'd expect, about chasing girls and shot glasses, but not everyone needs to write like Voltaire to get the message across. Good stuff."
Schoolwork might interfere with Jules09 posting as often as she wishes she could, but it doesn't get in the way of the amount of live concerts she's seen just this year. "I'm probably most happy that I got to see Muse in a venue with about 1500 other people, and then later hearing they sold out Wembley Stadium. But seeing Modest Mouse twice (and both times with Johnny Marr, no less!), British Sea Power tearing up a small local club, The Mars Volta playing for literally three hours straight, and Radiohead (what else really needs to be said about Radiohead?) in less than a year has made 2008 the best concert year for me so far."
Stop by and say hi to Jules09!
