2008 Festival-Going Wrap-up, Including Talking with Thom Yorke

Trash Menagerie: "Summer is coming to an end. It's been a good one, kept me busy, got to do some traveling, made my way across the country and back a few times, ran into old friends, made some new ones, found myself at more day events and festivals than clubs, which was really great. Soon enough it's going to be cold here in New York, and I'll be taking shelter in a club and paying $8 for cocktails. Since I've been slacking in the post department, I'm going to try and make up for lost time with a "summery" of my 2008."

Album Reviews of the Week

Artist: Frightened Rabbit

Album: The Midnight Organ Fight

The World Forgot: "Once in awhile along comes an album that I unceremoniously foist upon anyone within earshot of my current home. Once there was an album called The Colour and the Shape, then there was The Blue Album, followed by Is This It, followed by Greetings from Michigan, followed by Wednesdays, followed by, well, you get the picture."

Artist: Lykke Li

Album: Youth Novels

The Line Of Best Fit: "Given that she's just 22, Youth Novels is an appropriate title for Swedish singer-songwriter Lykke Li's first album. Indeed, if there's a theme that links some of these songs together, it must surely be the trials and tribulations of being young - Li sings of struggling to express herself on "Dance Dance Dance", of isolation on "Everybody But Me", and of course the complexities of relationships on various other tracks, like "Little Bit"."

Artist: Randy Newman

Album: Harps and Angels

incurablyerin: "There's something about the way that Randy Newman hits those ivory keys—it's a little bit boogie woogie, a little bit ragtime, a little bit blues, a little bit soul, and way more than just a little bit Randy Newman. That's right, he's created his own genre."

Artist: Matthew Sweet

Album: Sunshine Lies

Aug 26 2008

carmensandiego: "It's official. Matthew Sweet's love life is in shambles, and he's not sure whether he craves love or wants to push it away. And instead of shelling out the cash to consult a therapist about his self-destructive behavior, he decided to make a record detailing his desperate longing for a mystery woman and either her rebuffed attempts at requited love or his subsequent decision to minimize his feelings for her. Either way, Sunshine Lies is a 13-song set full of begging, crying, confessions, loneliness, and ultimately a wary desire by Sweet to strike out on his own."

Artist: The Sight Below

Album: No Place For Us

Sun Sept 7 2008

Headphone Commute: "Entering the domain of ambient techno producers, is a newcomer by the name of The Sight Below. Ghostly didn't think twice (and better for it), and snatched TSB for his first three-track EP, titled No Place For Us. The fact that I'm even taking the time to mention a digital single should tell you how excited I am about the upcoming work from this Seattle based musician."

Artist: Skillz

Album: The Million Dollar Backpack

Aug 29 2008

brittanybf: "As countless other reviews will tell you, if you've listened to rap in recent years you've heard Skillz before. The Virginia rapper came up as a ghostwriter. Although ghostwriting is a commonplace practice in R&B and pop music, in certain ways it's the antithesis of rap--a very hush-hush subject among hip hop heads."

Slip Inside This House

Thu Sept 4 2008

theboypaperweight: "It seems that every genre of music has at least one artist who stands out. They define what it means to play within that boundry and raise the bar. But, if your really lucky and look for it you can find the ones that slipped through the cracks through various speed bumps on the road to glory(for lack of a better word). The Brian Jonestown Massacre falls into this category."

Rufus Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche

Mon Sept 8 2008

Tiny Mix Tapes: "It was a family affair — the happy kind. The kind where everyone's a little buzzed, discussions on music and movies are rampant, and you discover your favorite uncle smokes pot, too. Rufus Wainwright performed an intimate solo show, and his half-sister Lucy Wainwright Roche opened in similar fashion, armed only with an acoustic guitar and witty banter."

"Not In The Face": Howie B Interview!

Mon Sept 8 2008

In Search of Arcadia: "There's the remix album (a la "I Love Serge" which Mr. B was on) and there's the album remixed, remodeled, and reshaped. One is usually done piece by piece (usually by a smattering of random artists chosen by God knows who)... and the other is a painstakingly involved process that begs commitment and precision, lest the artist ruin the source material."

Best New Music: Enemy Edition

In August, Ra Ra Riot finally released their first full length, featuring new tracks, a couple old ones, and some re-recordings."

The Walkmen - "On the Water" & "Donde Esta La Playa"
Fri Sept 5 2008

Look at me, I made a blog: "I'd never really caught onto the Walkmen hype back in 2004 when they released Bows Arrows, off which "Little House of Savages" is probably the most well-known track (Thank you, The O.C.). As a bright-eyed freshman in college, I had no idea who the Walkmen were or why I should be excited about their being the main act for our fall concert. Was it because one of the members was an alum? Possibly."

What Was That?: Some Thoughts on Kanye's New Song "Love Lockdown" (Live at the VMA's)

Mon Sept 8 2008

watchbatteries: "Kanye might be suffering from depression. While Mr. West is without a doubt one of the biggest musical acts that in this decade, he certainly could have some personal demons to face. He's grown from producing classic cuts for Jay-Z, to producing a classic debut and a well-respected discography. The sound was uniquely 'Ye though."

Provocateurs at the RNC

Thu Sept 4 2008

Imageyenation: "I'm always frustrated when I hear stories of peaceful demonstrations gone awry. The rioting that ensued after 'protesters' smashed windows at this year's Republican National Convention flew me into a frenzy. Iron Giant and I were talking about it a couple days ago when she said, with confidence, that even though '99%' of the demonstrators were peaceful, people will only talk about those few rotten apples that made a bad name for everyone else. She WAS absolutely correct in her assessment."

Mogger of the Week

Say hello to incurablyerin!

http://mog.com/incurablyerin

"Funny, how connected the world is," incurablyerin states. Having recently attended a NYC performance by Richard Lloyd & The Sufi Monkey Trio ("Richard Lloyd and his drummer Billy Ficca are a couple of the founding members of legendary punk band Television."), she not only got to see them tear through a great set and meet them but also ran into Billy Ficca in the West Village a few days ago and found out they were headed to the same destination. "We were both on our way to a new Patti Smith documentary."

Patti Smith's Horses is the album Erin calls her favorite. "Life-changing," "poetic," and "encouraging," are a few adjectives Erin uses in reference to Smith's 1975 album. "She completely ignored gender roles and got so utterly absorbed in the music."

More recently, Erin discovered My Brightest Diamond. Perhaps 're-discovered' is more accurate: "I've known of their singer, Shara Worden, for maybe five or six years. She used to be in this avant/experimental/noise band in NYC years ago called AwRY." My Brightest Diamond's album A Thousand Shark's Teeth, is a favorite. "I reviewed that album not too long ago here on MOG." http://mog.com/incurablyerin/blog/174249

Erin, a former English major, has been sharing her album reviews on her MOG page. "Writing analytical reviews forces me to really think about the music, to really listen to it and catch all of those details." Most recently Erin has reviewed the new Randy Newman album. http://mog.com/incurablyerin/blog/188372
