Live! Conor Oberst & The Mystic Valley Band at Manchester Academy
Joxley: "It's been a long time since Conor Oberst, known to most as Mr. Bright Eyes, played a show in Manchester. Three and half years, to be precise. And all that time I've been waiting for it. You could probably call me a superfan - I own 152 songs by him, I know the words to four of his albums by heart. I've watched the Saddle Creek DVD and know obscure facts about his life that even he's probably forgotten. So, as you can imagine, I was pretty psyched for his return, this time with his Mystic Valley Band."

Album Reviews of the Week
Artist: The Verve
Album: Forth
Kronski: "How do you a review a record for a band whose previous work you admired so much over the years that when you look at their catalog, you are really looking back at the events in your own life, proof of how music can get grafted onto us and lodged within us so deeply that the music becomes synonymous with who we are. Case in point with Verve's fourth record, Forth. To say that this release was anticipated by the music world is to stretch the very notion of patience."

Artist: Janelle Monae
Album: Metropolis: The Chase Suite
carmensandiego: "'Good morning cyberboys and cybergirls. I'm happy to announce we have a star-crossed winner in today's heartbreak sweepstakes. Android 57821, otherwise known as Cindi Mayweather, has fallen desperately in love with a human named Anthony Greendow. And you know the rules: she's now scheduled for immediate disassembly!'"

Artist: Mason Jennings
Album: In The Ever
The Line Of Best Fit: "The sixth album from Hawaiian-born singer-songwriter Mason Jennings is a bit of a treat. In The Ever is varied and well-written, a patchwork of solid, well put together songs which together encompass humour, romance and tragedy. It opens with "Never Knew Your Name" and "Something About Your Love", which is possibly unwise as they're the two most straightforward and predictable songs on offer here."

Artist: Nicolay & Kay
Album: Time:Line
Ben Heller: "There are just a few occasions when one realizes the full wonder of this global communication super highway called the internet. For all the salutary tales of the dangers of how the medium is destroying modern music, for most it is still an incredible world of discovery, and has encouraged listeners like me to investigate new projects and make informed choices with utmost confidence. Had "Time:Line" been released ten years ago it would have undoubtedly passed me by; the weight of limited exposure via TV and radio narrowed everyone's listening habits to all but a lucky few."

Artist: The Manhattan Love Suicides
Album: Burnt Out Landscapes
DaveCromwell: "The Manhattan Love Suicides have released an epic 27 song compilation that contains every significant song they've released so far - and then some. In addition to their amazing singles, there are a number of radio station performances that were recorded live and on the fly - as well as additional bonus previously unreleased tracks. What follows here is a complete track-by-track analysis of each song."

Artist: Skillz
Album: The Million Dollar Backpack
brittanybf: "As countless other reviews will tell you, if you've listened to rap in recent years you've heard Skillz before. The Virginia rapper came up as a ghostwriter. Although ghostwriting is a commonplace practice in R&B and pop music, in certain ways it's the antithesis of rap -- a very hush-hush subject among hip hop heads."

Artist: Roots Manuva
Album: Slime & Reason
Jus' Like Music: "Unless you've been living under a rock, then you will no doubt have been eagerly anticipating the new Roots Manuva LP Slime & Reason just as much as I have. Officially out on 1st September on Big Dada, but emphatically reviewed right here on Jus Like Music and right now."

Artist: Mercury Rev
Album: Snowflake Midnight
Joxley: "It's hard to get through a Mercury Rev review without coming across certain words - dream-like, whimsical, fanciful… every word that can convey delicate beauty of the band's meandering psychedelica is almost destined to crop up. After18 years, you'd have thought the writers of the world could have come up with something different to say, but in reality Rev's sound is so indescribable that nothing else will suffice."

White Folks Get Crunk: "First off, I am not a huge Girl Talk fan, or Easter Egg, or anybody like that. The music is interesting and every once in a while I might throw one on at a party if I think I can pull it off. So I get this DJ who sends me his mix and calls it in the fashion of Girl Talk, so I looked over it."

If I Were to Make a Movie Based on a Song…
Thu Aug 28 2008
mmcnamara14: "Music is a very visual thing for me. I know that doesn't make sense, but let me explain. Like I stated in my previous post , when I hear music my brain instantly associates it with certain things. One of those things that happens is that any song that I hear brings a certain visual to mind."

MetalSucks: "The other day I went to NYC to check out In This Moment at their record release party. Needless to say, I had a good night because I got to see a lot of people I haven't seen in a little while and the night turned out to be very interesting. In This Moment were very good and their new direction gave me hopes about the type of success they may have."

Showing the MOG Love
Tue Aug 26 2008
Mike the Knife: "So what inspires your MOG love? And why? What gets you to jump onto a fellow MOGger's thread? What kind of post elicits a comment from you? Need to express solidarity with someone else who just "gets" a favorite artist of yours? Compelled to swap anecdotes or answer a query? Why do you come back here to read, listen, look, post and comment, day after day, week after week?"

Big Black Dream
Wed Aug 27 2008
Punk Turns 30: "All the rage in America, and likely the world today is that Barack Obama will be accepting the Democratic Party's nomination for President... today, August 28, the anniversary of Martin Luther King 's 1963 I Have A Dream speech. Is America ready for Black president? […]Even in rock n roll, the Black man has been given short shrift."

100 Albums That Changed The World - #100
Tue Aug 26 2008
RobinH: "A while ago I picked up on a book which had been out since 2006. The grandly titled,"100 Albums That Changed Music", makes very addictive reading for a musicophile such as myself. I tend to use books, such as this, to inspire me to go out there and check out albums I missed first time around, or just artists I had no real interest in checking out."

Michael, Prince & Madonna: A Birthday Celebration For Three Icons
Fri Aug 29 2008
The Round Table: "Much has been made about 2008 being the year that our last three definitive pop icons-Michael Jackson, Madonna and Prince-all turn 50. These three artists, all born within three months of one another (Prince on June 7th, Madonna on August 16th, and Michael celebrating his birthday on August 29th), changed the playing field on so many different levels."

Recording Update
Thur Aug 28 2008
Kate Earl: "Recording is going well. I feel like a boss lady. 10 day lock out of a gorgeous studio with carved wood and purple raw silk walls, a live room with a baby grand, a vocal booth with some mic that costs as much as a car, I can lay in the sunlight and write lyrics by a wall of windows."

Fri Aug 29 2008
ErinHanson: "On my drive home. I was listening to the radio today (the wonderful Zone 91.3 FM from Victoria) and this fantastic song came on. It was the Beta Band. I was floored-- a Beta Band song I had never heard before, but a Beta Band song I instantly loved."

Mogger of the Week
Say hello to Eric5776!
Formerly an Artist Development Representative, Eric5776 has had the pleasure of working with and meeting artists of varied genres. Among them, Café Tacuba, Frou Frou, Fiction Plane, H2O, Midtown, A New Found Glory, Jesse Harris (writer of Norah Jones' Grammy-winning song "Don't Know Why"), Senses Fail, Leona Naess, Rhett Miller, Nonpoint and Res. "It was a thrill to work w/ Rhett Miller because I had been a fan of his previous solo album and the Old 97's to boot."
Although he left the job a couple years ago and happily "rediscovered [his] love for music," Eric5776 has kept in touch with the bass player of A New Found Glory Ian. He calls the band his "closest pals while in music." "I sort of started with them when they were opening for hardcore bands and they were selling their own merch."
He came to MOG through an NPR program called Soundcheck with John Schaefer. "They were discussing MOG and interviewing the band Ollabelle about it." It was enough to get him to check out MOG and get himself his own MOG page. Since he's been mogging (he's over one and a half years old in MOG years), artists that he's gotten turned onto include The Acorn, These New Puritans, Against Me, The Good, The Bad and the Queen, Two Gallants, and Paul Westerberg.
Asked what his favorite album is and he explains, "Obviously, favorite albums of all time change frequently, but I can honestly say that album-wise, R.E.M.'s Automatic For the People is as solid of a release as it gets for me."
Stop by and say hi to Eric5776!
