Album Reviews of the Week

Artist: Juliana Hatfield

Album: How to Walk Away

incurablyerin: "While the 1990s have come and gone for most of us, Juliana Hatfield's new album retains that familiar alterna-indie-rock sound. It's the sound that made us care about her in the first place--that and Ms. Hatfield's signature wispy, kittenish voice singing about the lighter side of heartbreak. "The fact remains," Ms. Hatfield sings in the first track of the same name on her recent release, How to Walk Away, and so too remains the Juliana Hatfield we all remember."

Artist: Death Vessel

Album: Nothing is Precious Enough For Us

Captain Obvious: "What's with all these Americana and folk artists with names that sound more fitting for death metal bands? I think I'm going to start a bluegrass band named Bludgeoned Carcass. Death Vessel is actually the moniker for singer/songwriter Joel Thibodeau, who has long enough hair to be in a death metal band but actually creates a unique brand of psych-folk."

Artist: Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis

Album: Two Men with the Blues

carmensandiego: "In early 2007, Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis teamed up for two live shows at Jazz at Lincoln Center billed simply as Willie Nelson Sings the Blues. Accompanied by Marsalis's band, the two mostly took on old blues standards, from Chicago-style down south to the Big Easy, resulting in what had to be a moment of providence for honest audiophiles - a live record credited to Nelson and Marsalis boasting of their emergence as Two Men with the Blues."

Artist: Islands

Album: Arm's Way

pinkertonwasbetter: "You went to all of their shows. You sent in the $7 needed to join their fan club. You wore their T-shirt everyday straight for a week. And how did they repay you? By breaking up. Such is the relationship saga of many fans of the phenomenal indie rock band the Unicorns. May they rest in peace. As in other areas of life, however, there are never any real ends to relationships, only the beginnings of new ones. Such is the story of Islands, sprung from the ashes of the Unicorns."

Artist: Sparks

Album: Exotic Creatures of the Deep

Spencer Owen: "Joke refrains repeated to death by a flamboyant, falsetto-flaunting singer (Russell Mael) with harmony stacks bigger than Freddie Mercury's. Songs based on novelty-style concepts. Unrealistic, programmed synthetic string sections and piano patches (Ron Mael) standing in for the real thing, with occasional silly rock riffing and drums and even a track mostly cribbed from a Kylie Minogue strip-club groove. All from a pair of brothers that's still doggedly making music after roughly 40 years."

CONCERT REVIEW: Bob Dylan Blows An Anti-War Message Through Prospect Park, Brooklyn

Wed Aug 13 2008

indiepixie: "Listening to Dylan live today can be equated to listening to Dylan in the early 60s via transistor radio in a cornfield in Nebraska. His voice live is almost unrecognizable, like it's been dragged through tobacco fields naked, tortured for years in smokey bars with no windows, lugged through tired deserts of American heartland, washed out to sea and beached back again, and then hung to dry for too long on radio antennas everywhere."

Listen to Dr. Dog's Lillywhite Session

Fri Aug 15 2008

Anyone's Guess: "Philly's Dr. Dog recorded live a handful of songs from their new album, <I>Fate</I>, with Steve Lillywhite as part of an on-going series on World Café. These guys are terrific - so too the new album - with their jaunty sixties-style beats and harmonies enveloped by a modern rock sensibility."

Interlude: Surprise, Surprise

Wed Aug 13 2008

ÜberDrivel: "Whenever I go to a show, I'm hoping for the unexpected. There are hits and misses, but generally if something unusual happens, that's a good thing. Since my iPod is busted and I'd rather be outside than attached to computers speakers, exposure to new music has been primarily through shows this summer. I think that's often the best way, as the live setting really allows an artist to inject some personality into their art, and sometimes a band's mannerisms are as compelling as the music. The summer is quickly coming to an end, but the shows keep coming."

Gnarls Barkley: Hail, Hail, Rock 'n' Roll!

Tues Aug 12 2008

carmensandiego: "I expected many things tonight as I made my way into Atlanta to catch Gnarls Barkley at the Variety Playhouse. I expected a spaceman costume or two, maybe a bunny suit, or even an impromptu wedding ceremony where Cee-Lo plays the role of the blushing, heavily-tattooed bride - all with a hip-hop/R&B-edged soundtrack to go along with it. Fair enough, right? Out of all possible expectations, though, the one that came through in the end is the one I never saw coming: Gnarls Barkley may have been the best rock n roll concert I will ever see."

So I Guess I Won MOG Wars, eh?

Fri Aug 15 2008

Groon: "I was going to post some sort of big, over-the-top production about fighting battles and wars and vanquishing foes and such, but honestly my creative juices don't seem to be flowing too well at the moment, and I don't want to make it boring or stupid, or even worse, annoying and bragging. So let me just say thanks to everyone who helped make my first MOG wars a lot of fun."

The Capitol Hill Block Party

Sun Aug 17 2008

amber: "With all the hoopla of Coachella and Bonnaroo, with Virgin and APW and Lolla, we tend to forget the small music festivals. I, too, have been remiss about touting the greatness of local block parties; despite the lack of huge name headliners, there is often such lovely aural goodness to indulge in."

One Year Later

Mon Aug 18 2008

Kate Earl: "A year ago I was homeless. My independent label was dismantled and I had hoped to be signed onto the major portion of my label. I had no interest in touring the old sound while a new sound needed to be developed. I had to find the music I heard inside. I had made Fate and now I was talking about beats and soul and groove and people looked at me like "you? right." I was stuck in this Catch-22: no money for recording and no money until recordings had been turned in."

Detroit, Bowling, GPS, St. Paul

Mon Aug 18 2008

Your Vegas: "Hi everyone, hope you're well. Jon here on the blog. The time is 3:14 am on Saturday morning and the place is my hotel room in St. Paul, Minnesota. Last night we performed at the Magic Stick in Detroit. We've played there once before opening up for The Bravery but last night was our own headline show. What's great about the Magic Stick is that there's a bowling alley downstairs so after rocking out we went to try out our bowling abilities."

Mogger of the Week

Say hello to Ben Heller!

http://mog.com/Ben_Heller

Ben Heller hails from "an area known as the Black Country in the heart of U.K." He's a vinyl junkie who has "devoted a 'shrine-like' room to my 3000+ albums. It's my sanctuary, my escape, my 'comfort blanket.'" What encouraged him to build up such a large collection? Ben says he's been collecting "since I realised I wasn't a good enough singer or songwriter to achieve my dreams."

Though he owns a lot of music he still has a couple worth naming as favorites. "<I>London Calling</I> by The Clash remains my favourite album of all time, closely followed by The Beatles' <I>Abbey Road</I>."

In the two years he's been a Mogger Ben has found, "MOG respects everyone's opinion. We're not all as literate as the professional writers, but when your regular Mogger posts, it's with passion, and for me that's what it's all about...passion for the integral reason we're all here-music."

Be sure to say hi to Ben Heller!
