Ernest Sings a Ballad
As far as movie ballads are concerned, "Gee I'm Glad it's Raining" is comparable to Celene Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" from the Titanic soundtrack. Actually, in many ways, "Gee I'm Glad it's Raining" surpasses "My Heart Will Go On." Dion's anthem, while connected to Titanic, maintains a sense of generality in its approach: the song could be picked up and attached to any romantic story. On the other hand, Ernest's heartfelt song could never be transported to another movie, it is impossible to understand Ernest's heartbreak out of the context of Ernest Goes to Camp. The song not only speaks to the story, it speaks the story--a distinction that makes all the difference. When Varney is packing his bag, he's not just leaving camp, he's leaving his idealist perspective on life. Make no mistake, the song doesn't represent conflict in the sense that Ernest isn't sure whether or not his philosophical perspective is in jeopardy; instead, he knows it doesn't work. When he says, "I was a counselor" at the beginning of the clip, not only does he pave the way for the tear-soaked lyrics "a wounded warrior needs a place to hide," but the former line gives no indication of hope; and, thus begins Ernest's foray into existentalism and nihilism that eventually leads to Ernest risking his life at the end of the film and following the Native American path of a warrior. Again, "a wounded warrior" (Ernest) "needs a place to hide" (the song, or the rain) represent rock bottom. It also forshadows the path of the warrior Ernest takes in the sense that he truly doesn't need a place to hide when the construction workers are shooting a rifle at him. Remember, the bullets or arrows can not touch a true warrior and there is no need to hide from them. At that moment in the film he is no longer a "wounded warrior" because he embraced existentialism; without hope, there is nothing to "wound." Inevitably and ironically this provides the confidence AND hope Ernest is searching for through Goes to Camp. Even if philosophy is not brought into the conversation, "Gee I'm Glad it's Raining" is just a great song. And for my money, it doesn't get any better than when Ernest sings "No one knows that thunder is your heartbreak in disguise."
