How better to cushion the blow of those pesky alimony payments than by mopping up royalties from songs about your marriage break-up?
Loads have done it: Phil Collins, Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, sundry country music folk, even Eminem. Most famously, Marvin Gaye released Here My Dear, an entire double album of such stuff after a court decreed that most of the cash from his next record should be handed over to ex-wife Anna Gordy.
I'm working on an article for a UK music mag, and was wondering if any Moggers out there had personal favourites of love-gone-wrong/loot-in-the bank oddities...?

loudon wainwright:
your mother and i what are families for? so damn happy unhappy anniversary
some women get to point to the love/lust songs written about them but the women ever involved with loudon get to point to the awful break up songs.

Thanks, Teresa - and let's not forget that Loudon's Your Mother And I, while addressed to the kids, seemed to have little impact on Martha, who, many years later, responded with her own song allegedly inspired by daddy, Bloody Mother-Fucking Asshole. Christmas must have been fab round the Wainwright tree, eh?

lauryn hill: The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
her break-up with Fugees and Wyclef Jean
and she has a solo album hit with songs like "Lost Ones", "Ex Factor", "Doo Wop (That Thing)" and "I used to Love Him"
ouch.

Don't know who it was aimed at, but there's Harry Nilsson's "You're Breakin' My Heart."
