Macca Goes Postal

No, Paul hasn't finally snapped and pumped Heather full of lead (he could probably afford to get someone else to do that for him), rather the title of this post refers to the lovely looking stamps that went on sale in the UK a couple of weeks ago. There's a series of six featuring classic album covers (With The Beatles, Help!, Revolver, Sgt Pepper, Abbey Road, Let It Be), but for my money the pick of the bunch has to be this sheet depicting fan memorabilia from the early days...It's seen as quite an honour here in Blighty, as until very recently no living person other than a member of the royal family was permitted to have their likeness on a stamp. So, my question is this: Forget about Elvis, Sinatra, Marley, Hendrix or Cobain - which living musician would you nominate for postal posterity, or even to feature on currency?

  2. Terry Staunton says Hey, I just remembered the minor furore that accompanied a stamp featuring Freddie Mercury back in 1999. It was a live shot, with drummer Roger Taylor clearly visible in the background, and was minted before the "no living people other than royals" rule was relaxed. Here's how The Mirror reported this monumental scandal... *Off With His Head!* *Fury As Queen Drummer Breaks Rules And Appears On New Stamp* A millennium stamp showing Queen drummer Roger Taylor was slammed yesterday - because he is still alive. Royal Mail rules say only members of the Royal Family can be portrayed on stamps during their lifetime. The 19p stamp, now on sale, pictures the late Queen singer Freddie Mercury performing, with Roger Taylor in the background. Critics said being in a group called Queen doesn't put the stamp within the rules. And they attacked the Royal Mail for allowing Aids victim Freddie on one of their designs. Philatelist Peter Jennings said heads should roll: "I am extremely surprised that the Royal Mail has broken the strict rule that no living person other than a member of the Royal Family may appear on a British postage stamp. "Roger Taylor is clearly shown behind a set of drums proclaiming the name Queen on a stamp which depicts lead singer Freddie Mercury." Mr. Jennings added that it was "in poor taste" dedicate a stamp to Freddie Mercury, who died of an Aids-related illness in 1991. He wants the Royal Mail stamp advisory committee scrapped and the public given a "meaningful say" on future stamp subjects. The new stamp is part of The Entertainer's Tale set whose other subjects include England's World Cup winning captain Bobby Moore (26p), a fictional Doctor Who Dalek (44p) and comic film star Charlie Chaplin. Freddie Mercury was a lifelong stamp enthusiast whose collection is now in the possession of the Royal Mail. A Royal Mail spokesman said the new stamp had a tiny portrait of Roger Taylor and called for "common sense to prevail". He added: "It is important to say that every stamp is approved by the Queen, including this one, which was also given the consent of Freddie Mercury's family and Mr. Taylor."

  4. Anna says Paul Banks from Interpol or Alex Kapranos from Franz Ferdinand. But only because I'd get to lick them. ahahhahahahah (sorry, Terry)

  5. Terry Staunton says I figured it was only a matter of time before someone came up with the inevitable "lick" comment - should have known it would be you, Anna! ;)

  6. Anna says Hahah I couldn't resist the urge...(thank you for not deleting me from your trusteds & I'm also willing to bet that Hell is giggling :P)

  7. Jonh Ingham says When Anna's involved I'm surprised it's not Brian Molko getting a good licking.

  8. Anna says We already discussed that, he doesn't want me (yet - muwhahhaa). :)

  9. Terry Staunton says Apparently there was a song by the group Lemon Jelly in about 2000 called The Staunton Lick. Has anyone ever heard it? I'd be interested to know if it's suitable to be adapted as my theme tune...

  10. Jonh Ingham says I knew Anna would come back with that lame excuse. ;-) Back to your original theme, Terry, I'd nominate George Martin.

  11. QueenofHell says Anna, the posters on your walls must be saturated with drool from many years of licking.

  12. Anna says (I know that no one will believe me, but I don't have band posters on my walls. In fact I got my first band members crushes in 2006. It's true, I swear!)

  13. QueenofHell says I'm only kidding. I can't believe you don't have posters. You need some. I have an old poster for a Patrick Wolf gig on my wall, but I've never licked it. I also have old movie posters in my sitting room.

  14. Anna says I have movie posters on my walls, too :) Oh, and a Franz Ferdinand 2007 calendar a friend of mine brought me from London! Sweet London...

  15. lemontwist says Before I read Anna's first comment I was thinking the same about a Mark Lanegan stamp. :)

  16. Terry Staunton says Well, that's just bloody typical, isn't it? Here I am, trying to instigate a serious, thought-provoking post, and it gets hi-jacked by a bunch of horny, salivating women. Mop yourselves down and show some decorum, ladies! ;)

  17. QueenofHell says I thought more about who might look pleasing in the top right hand corner of my letters. I think it would be good it part of a Jarvis video featured him as a singing face on the stamp of a letter.

  18. Dale says Shaun Ryder on a stamp would make me steer well clear of licking it. ;)
    Permalink posted 01/31/2007
  19. Terry Staunton says Of course, you know the real reason why the Queen never posts her own letters, don't you? The likeness of her featured on the stamps is an image from many years ago, and her staff wants to avoid a wistful moment where today's octogenarian looks at the envelope and sighs, "Aah, I used to be so pretty..."

  20. Kid Charming says I'd nominate B.B. King.

  21. Jonh Ingham says Keith Richards. Just because.
