WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Name Changes

So, next February sees the release of the 30th anniversary edition of Nick Lowe's debut album Jesus Of Cool. When first issued in the US back in 1978 it was under a different title, namely Pure Pop For Now People, the J-word being thought as too inflammatory in some parts of the country.I'm now trying to put together a list of other albums whose titles were altered in foreign territories. Things like Prefab Sprout's Steve McQueen, which was changed in the US to Two Wheels Good, after objections by the late actor's estate. There's been similar changes on early records by both Slade and The Faces, among others, but can any of my knowledgable MOG friends think of further examples?

  1. Dale says Jimmy Eat World's album Bleed American had its title stripped, making it homonymous, after the 9/11 attacks. At the same time, the lead single from Bush's album Golden State was renamed from "Speed Kills" to "The People That We Love".

  2. Terry Staunton says Good call, Dale, thanks. It also reminded me that Kylie Minogue changed the title of the album that was due to be called Impossible Princess, because of the Diana crash back in 97.

  3. blueone51 says The Who’s “A Quick One” was issued in the US as “Happy Jack”. Can only image the record company brain trust discussion around that decision.

  5. Jonh Ingham says It seems US labels have problems with long names - Manic Street Preachers had an album held back purely because the title was too long.
