THE MUSIC BLOGGING HIVE MIND

Judging Musicians By More Than Their Music

Posted over 2 years ago
I found out that a band I recently 'discovered' - Flyleaf - is a Christan rock band or at least marketed as Bible thumpers. For a split second I wondered if I should continue to like them, since I'm not very religious and don't feel lifted up by song sermons. But then I slapped myself hard and said "HEY, music is music. Now go get some ice before this swells up." Do you have any bands that you have written off or, on the contrary, liked MORE because of their personal beliefs or off-stage activities?

  1. chucky says Yep...a couple spring to mind immediately. Flyleaf and Rise Against. I managed to mostly get over both hang ups. One of my first posts here was about Flyleaf and how I had the same realization you did. Haha - good stuff. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

  2. mutterimieli says A lot of the bands I found last year happened to be Christian Rock. I never write off good music. It's just a label and labels can be peeled off. :D

  5. Violet Grey says I find that if a band or artist engages in activities or holds ideas that I find distasteful that I tend to sour on them. The only artist that ever drew me into their music with their "off record" persona is Henry Rollins, whose music I came to listen to only after reading his books and seeing his talking shows. I know how much of a creators personality comes out in their creations and when someone is doing something I have a problem it colors the way I hear them.

  7. Jonh Ingham says U2 holds a special swing-o-meter in my heart. Sometimes admire Bono, sometimes detest him. In either state, interest in their music can be raised or extinguished. Devil still has the best tunes.

  8. Taylspin says U2 is an excellent example, because they have extremely strong non-music activities. I agree that they seem very noble, but can be very annoying and sactimonious sometimes. But please, I would never be that honorable if I ever got famous. Forget fighting AIDS in Africa. I'd probably spend most of my off-tour hours jumping into people's pictures and trying to hold strangers' babies.
