Leroi Moore 1961 - 2008

Posted almost 4 years ago

As I've been a BAD Mogger the past year and could list numerous reasons as to why I haven't been a part of Mogville, USA I have a pretty good reason to write today. Yesterday we lost a fine musician of our generation. If you didn't hear - Leroi Moore the saxophonist for the Dave Matthews Band passed away due to complications from an ATV accident on June 30th. The accident was apparently bad enough to take leroi off the tour bus. When I got word of the accident I was upset but somehow knew that he just needed some time to recoup. Who would have known his injuries would resurface?

I got wind of this death from a former student who is just as much of a Dave-Head as I was when I was in my early 20's. I was in disbelief and needed to check myself using the internet (antsmarching.org - Warehouse.dmband.com and dmband.com). All the sites had nothing about Leroi's departure from the band which is what I initially thought my student was saying. Then I did a search for "Dave Matthews Band members" in google and found what I feared. There is was as big as the day - 1961 - 2008. Now there have been MANY artists taken from us too early but this was one that was truly part of my lifestyle. Ever since I was 18 - I have loved the Dave Matthews Band. I have met friends and even started tailgating because of this band. Even today at 33 all I have to do is make a few calls (Lizziegreeneyes being the first of many of them) and there would be a slew of DMB fans at a concert.

Sorry - I'm feeling a little nostalgic. I do have a point. I'd like to give my deepest regards to Leroi's family and the band members… And give the biggest amount of respect for the band members for continuing to play at the Staples Center in LA the same day Leroi passed on. If you get a chance - read or listen to what Dave Matthews said to the fans at that show or look at the setlist and you'll understand why I love and respect for the band so freakin' much.

Rest In Peace Leroi Moore. You have touched so many with your talent and will continue to do so for many years to come!
