Singing in the Rain

It's spring break. Thousands of kids have mashed themselves into a tiny makeshift arena to see one band.....Bush.

But it's raining.

Bush is not going to play in the rain. All the kids will go home disappointed. Except....one man, Gavin Rossdale, the man who is/was BUSH ....plays.

In the rain.

Electric guitar and all, he plays, solo.

It is one of the more amazing rock videos I've ever seen. And it made me think.

Why? Why take a risk like that?

Forget the electrocution aspect....think about playing a wet electric guitar with wet fingers and rain in your eyes. What are the chances it doesn't just suck? Not only that, play your signature song, the one everyone recognizes and will KNOW when it's screwed up.

Why put yourself in that position?

The answer is really quite simple.

He didn't want to let the kids down. He felt a responsibility to people he didn't know to perform simply because they were there to see him do so. It wasn't obligation. No one pushes themselves to do things that are harmful or potentially harmful to themselves out of a sense of obligation.

This sense of responsibility stuff is pretty powerful. It pushes people to do more, be more, achieve more than they ever would have thought possible. Doesn't mean they are not scared out of their freakin minds sometimes(most of the time), doesn't mean that they don't have doubts (every damn day), doesn't mean that they don't sometimes (lotsa times) fail.

The difference is, they don't give up. They don't look up into the rain and think, "I'm through for the day."

They can't. Not as long as "the kids" are depending on them.

"Amy Lee.....I Love You"

I love Evanescence. And not just because I can actually SPELL Evanescence.
I love their music.

I love the goofy smiles Amy Lee gets when she's getting lots of attention.

I love the way emotion bleeds out of her soaring or growling voice whether she's laying on her back on top of a metal building wearing lace somethings on My Immortal

or swimming underwater with demons at a Detroit rock concert on "Going Under"

(has to be Detroit, only place I can think of that has enough demons to fill a concert hall).

I realize that by law you are supposed to be 19 or under to be a fan. Something about heavy metal riffs and young testosterone. I'm here to tell you that old guy testosterone works pretty well where Amy Lee is concerned, and I've been eating Heavy Metal Riffs for breakfast since I was 13.

Yes they sometimes come across as pretentious, yes they are a bit to much goth or emo or whatever the hell it's called nowadays when you wear black eyeliner and act bummed out all the time except when you're band plays.

Shit, I did all that. Isn't that what every 19 year old does? Ok .... I didn't wear black eyeliner. But I would have.....if it would have helped me get laid. Hell, I'd wear it today to that end....but I digress.

Songs that rock, a voice so powerful that you feel it beneath your skin, a uniquely sexy young woman....

things like this don't change the affect they have, regardless of the age of the person being affected. So I'm not going to feel embarrassed that I love Evanescence or for that matter
Linkin Park , or Staind or Chevelle ...and on and on and on.

I am not delusional. I know that Ms. Amy Lee and I will never hook up. There's that age thingy....she's 25....too old for me. I'm planning for no older than say, 21, with 1 to 2 year relationships, die alone and leave my millions to my kids.

(note to self-----make millions)

Stupid Gir, Garbage and The Doo Doo Song

Music is a large part of my life, and has been as long as I can remember. I have around 100 vinyl albums that I held onto, maybe 50 CD's and an equal amount of CD mixes and over 4000 mp3's from around 1000 artists saved on my hard drive. But I also have two boys ages 10 and 8. Since I'll only let them listen to Rob Zombie about once a week, the song below is easily the overall favorite in the household.

The song is by Gir.

Gir is the sweet, naive, innocent, joyful robot servant to Invader Zim (if you have to ask....).

Gir in disguise

.
The song is Gir at his most blissfully innocent....

If that were not enough, a video of the essential Gir. To the Garbage song Stupid Girl (i swear it sounds like she's singing Gir not Girl)

.
Stupid Gir

Pale Blue Eyes

They lasted only 5 years, 1967 - 1972. They never found a mainstream audience despite the presence of two of the more creative and innovative artists of their day, John Cale and Lou Reed. At one point they were actually managed by Andy Warhol.

Brian Eno once said “Sure, the first Velvet Underground album only sold 10,000 copies, but of those ten thousand people, every last one of them went out and formed a band”. Obviously an exaggeration but it's not an exaggeration to say that they had as much influence on music in the last 40 years as any band of their era.

The Velvet Underground.

Their third album,
The Velvet Underground,
was released to almost no critical acclaim or consumer interest, but it contains some of their most pure music. All the songs were written by Lou Reed, and Pale Blue Eyes is one of the most beautifully delicate songs he ever penned.

Had to find it and listen to it after all the posts. So here it is. It was worth the effort.

I almost lost my son this past fall. And I had spoken with him earlier. I knew something was wrong and I asked him point blank. He convinced me everything was ok. Three hours later he tried to kill himself. Thank God someone stopped him in the process. More than one life would have been lost.

It's been so long
The rain keeps falling
It must be the rain drops
That are making me blind.
Not that i really want to see.
It doesn't bother me.
Nothing bothers me,
and nothing makes me smile
and nothing ever changes
and nothing makes me cry.

I've been in rain so long
I thought it had become a part of me.
But I'm not the rain.
I'm just less of me.
Dissolving slowly
till I'm gone.
I'm almost gone.
It doesn't matter if I cry.
No one sees tears in rain.
It's just as well.
They get tired of caring.
They don't look long enough
anymore
to tell where I begin
and everything ends.
Or maybe they see
that it never will.
Maybe they know
it's already to late,
and maybe they've already
said goodbye.

Doesn't matter.

Precious and Few

Formed in 1970 in Los Angeles, California, and not to be confused with the Climax Blues Band, Climax was a band most noted for their 1972 classic hit song "Precious and Few."

It's hard to believe it's been 35 years. I bought the 45(please tell me you know what a 45 is) when I was in 9th grade. The song was a popular "slow" song for junior high dances.

Climax consisted of Marc Gordon, Larry Cox, John Stevenson, Walter Nims, and Sonny Geraci. The band is considered a one-hit wonder because no other releases gained much widespread success. However, Climax was not a typical "one-hit wonder." Lead singer Sonny Geraci, who was formerly the front-man for the 1960s garage rock band The Outsiders (of "Time Won't Let Me" fame), later sang on a number of hit studio recordings with other artists. Keyboardist John Stevenson wrote the song "Rock and Roll Heaven." Climax decided to sell the recording rights to The Righteous Brothers who turned the song into one of the pop classics. Though "Precious and Few" was the band's only major hit recording, Climax has played a somewhat influential role in the wider arena of rock music.

And more importantly they've helped me remember slow dancin with Bobbi DeMarcus. Bobbi wore the shortest skirts.... ;)

Is this the best voice in rock?

Amy Lee recorded Live for Yahoo Italia. She is singing "Good Enough" off the "Open the Door" album. Her voice has never sounded better. Powerful, crystal clear, and demonstrating a range that isn't seen often in rock vocalists.

There are several other videos from the same session and each is unbelievable. They include "Lithium", "All That I'm Living For" and "Call Me When You're Sober". All of them were uploaded to YouTube by EvanescenceFan94

Doesn't matter if you're a fan or not...these are special.

If I'm standing in the rain
that's where i want to be.
Can you see me?
Glistening on your skin.
Trickling from your hair.
Why did you turn away
from me?
Just one more touch
like raindrops on my skin.
It's getting cold.
You'd laugh at me if you saw me
soaked and standing there.
I feel it.
I don't need more loss
raining in my eyes all day.
Everyday.
I need to hear you whisper,
To lose myself in the quiet of your eyes.
You turned away from me.
I'm not what I appear to be
I'm not how you think of me.
I'm more.
There must be more.
If you cut me
I bleed just like you.
Mostly, I do.
I'm by myself on my ledge.
It's not that far to the ground.
Maybe everything will look different
When I get down.
If I'm alone,
It's because I choose to be.
Why can't you see?
Are there raindrops in your eyes
just like me?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
this was the inspiration for "Rain"
creep
It is an animation featuring the acoustic version of Radiohead's song, "Creep". Both versions
of the song are on the album "Pablo Honey". If you've never heard the accoustic version before you've been missing out.
The Guitar God You May Not Know
He is the best I've ever heard. He makes a guitar sound like it is actually "feeling" emotion. In his hands, a guitar is a living creature. If you asked the very best young guitarists who was the major influence on their playing....80 or 90% would name him.
Details another time, but if you haven't before....meet Steve Vai. He is playing his song, "For the Love of God"
Cup of Coffee
"Garbage is just a producer's puppett band"....?!! NO...the Monkeys were, Garbage is made up of veteran musicians who survived the "New Wave" in the 80's and Grunge in the 90's, the critisism of their formation and the nit picking of their music. The result...fun, mostly techno-pop songs that are a bit off beat and catchy as hell. Their third album, Beautiful Garbage,
which was released in 2005, should have ended the "assembly-line" critisisms they've had to endure. It still has plenty of catchy but there is a nice big dose of unique and shuffleing alongside all the bouncy wierdness is a very distinct dark, somber, even morose.
If all they do is copycat...they are damn good at it...everybody from Annie Lennox to Radiohead. Try to get past the big red lipstick and listen for awhile. You might be suprised.
This is my favorite Garbage song on this or any of their albums. Cup of Coffee.
I just like the song...like the band too. And when everything is said and done that is the ONLY reason to listen to anyone.
Bother
Stone Sour has now been in existence 15 years, although for about half of that they were kind of non-existent. From around 1997 to 2002 the band was disbanded and two of the members, Vocalist Corey Taylor and James Root joined Slipknot and another member, Shawn Economaki became Slipknot's stage manager.
In 2000 Josh Rand and Corey Taylor worked on what would become Stone Sour songs while Taylor toured with Slipknot. The dual band-ship continues to this day.
Forgotten Rock
Brother Cane put out three quality southern hard rock/blues albums in the 90's and were well on their way to achieving star status until breaking up shortly after the release of their last album in 1998. For some reason they've largly been forgotten despite the excellence of all three albums.
I understand they will be releasing a double album soon so maybe they'll get some late recognition.
The mp3, Intempted, is actually a slower bluesier song that only hints at how they can rock but the musicianship and vocals on this track are consistent with the rest of their music.
Brother Cane
This album has a 5 star ranking at Amazon.com
