Matt and I attended a wedding over the weekend for dear friends of ours. Now, granted, I was very sick (always happens-- between the end of the term stress and holiday stress and traveling, and well, my family), but I wasn't all that impressed with the band. It's not like they couldn't play their instruments or that the lead singer had a bad voice or anything, but there are just some songs you don't play at a wedding, and most definitely some songs that you don't "mix" together, like you're doing a remix.
For example, at the beginning of the reception, they played "Route 66" and "Cats in the Cradle." Really? At a wedding? Then throughout the evening, they played weird mixes of songs-- like, they started with Bob Marley's "No Woman, No Cry" and then that became The Beatles "Let It Be" which transformed back into Bob Marley again. What? And then, they played the opening to Steve Miller's "Joker" but fooled us all by singing Shaggy's version of "You're My Angel" (no, I'm not kidding, complete with the terrible rapping part) and then began singing "Joker." It was so bizarre.
The evening did get a little better before we left (because of my dumb cold) when they played some monster 80s ballads, you know, standard stuff. "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and "Living on a Prayer," etc. All in all, it was... an entertaining night. And like Matt said, the bride and the groom were having a great time, so that's all that mattered, And I can't really fault them for enjoying bad music on their wedding can I?
