So it's been ages since I last MOGged...
I was lost in my dissertation proposal grind for awhile... and then before I knew it, the summer was here and I embarked upon my fieldwork excursion to Rwanda, where I lived for three months conducting research. There, my musical experience consisted of a lot of American mainstream (such as Nickleback, Beyonce, Rihanna, and Johnny Cash, of all things).
I returned in September in a whirlwind, trying to acclimate back to live on this side of the world. I also discovered a new love of house music... which is not something I would have ever suspected. Kigali has a very lively nightlife, and I spent many weekend nights dancing. Upon returning, I found the house scene to be the most welcoming scene in stark contradiction to the "pop" nightclubs I frequented in my younger days. As such, I've acquired a taste for djs such as Andy Caldwell and Kaskade... and even some local favorites from the small weekly dance club I attend. In particular, this song (the remix) is one of my favorites. I have it in constant rotation and find that it lifts my mood and inspires me to do more of whatever I'm doing (running, cleaning, writing, etc).
Anyway, fellow moggers, I am hoping to do my best to catch up on what I've been missing out on with your music.
First off, I feel as though I have to vent about my irritation with my internet. Something about our internet access prevents MOG from working on my computer, which keeps me from writing as often as I'd like (and especially, from commenting on most of your very thoughtful posts.) MOG doesn't recognize my password, so to log in each time, I have to do the "forgot password" and wait for the email, then change the password, etc... EVERY TIME. I love MOG, but that whole process annoys me, and deters me from posting (which is why it might seem like I"m that jerk who doesn't comment. I totally read your posts, I just don't often have the time to wait for the email etc.)
update** this has been fixed! Turns out all this time I wasn't confirmed for MOG, which isn't surprising since I had all kinds of issues trying to sign up in the first place. Thanks for your help Kate Moving on, I've been feeling very nostalgic of late. I think it's because a dear friend of mine from elementary school and I have been corresponding a lot. It made me miss that time in my life, before my father died (when I was 11). My father was an amazing person-- very musically oriented and a lover of all things good about music. If he had been alive, I am certain that I wouldn't have descended into the musical period of my life of which we do not speak (age 12-21). Yes, it was that bad. But previous to that, all I listened to with my dad was what has been lovingly (or not so much) termed "oldies." The Beatles, Roy Orbison, CCR... all the good stuff. And, my dad had it on vinyl. And you know that it was the original vinyl that he had been collecting since his teenage years (sadly, I do not know what has become of that vinyl).Anyway, my dad always used to tell me that I should have been born in the 60s, because we bonded over music. Though I can't say that I love everything from that time period, I can say that 60s (and early 70s) music has a special place in my heart and in my memories (even though I wasn't around quite yet). When I'm feeling especially nostalgic, it's all I want to listen to. I like to think that dad would approve of the way my music choices have progressed recently-- more towards the singer/songwriter/folksy vein. His all time favorite songs were "Stop, Children What's that Sound," "Cats in the Cradle," "Bye, Bye Miss American Pie," and anything by Roy Orbison and CCR. Classics, by any measure.
What musical decade do you belong to? Why?

Interesting post. I think I belong somewhere in the 00s, right where I am. Though my musical roots can be traced back in New Order, Joy Division, Depeche Mode and Smiths, I can honestly say that I even discovered this particular fact during the 00s. Not to mention the fact that all of the bands I spin on a daily basis are "new".

People always say I should have been born either 50 years ago or 50 years from now. But I don't think I could have handled being born before women's lib, so I made out okay. :)
Today, something terrible happened. I was driving to work, listening to one of my current favorite songs via the lovely CD player in my car... when the LCD screen read error after I changed lanes and the track skipped... then after recovering, there was that staticy noise that accompanies the death of the alternator.... but then, even more tragic, the CD player died. And it ate my Cold War Kids CD. Travesty. So, for the last 10 minutes of my commute to work and my entire 30 minute commute home, I was forced to listen to the atrocity that is radio in Orange County. The morning shows all make me very sad... the rock station's morning show is manageable, if you have enough time to get into it, which I didn't. And let's face it, there are only so many times in an hour that I can hear a Red Hot Chili Peppers song in an hour before I want to die (sorry any RHCP fans... their new stuff just doesn't do it for me. )
I also had to listen to the traffic reports on the way home this evening, which make me sad for my lovely home state. I laughed to myself a bit at how cryptic the plethora numbered freeways must seem to visitors, with "the 405 slow through the 101 junction" and "the 5 freeway gridlocked at the 10/60/101 interchange" along with some "the 118" and "the 110" tossed in for good measure. And I remember how everyone who's not from southern California makes fun of us for putting the "the" in front of our interstates when we talk about them.
And speaking of interstates, does anyone remember that Aerosmith video when Alicia Silverstone pretends to jump off of a bridge over one, but really she has the rope around her... I can't remember which of the songs from that Living on the Edge CD that song is from (yeah, that one song with Eddie "John Conner" Furlong in the video), but today I heard "Crazy," and it made me remember the good old days of MTV, when you could watch videos. And then I was sad. Because I was listening to Aerosmith and thinking about old school MTV when I still had the Cold War Kids song stuck in my head. And, I have to say, that I am more impressed with them each time I listen to the CD. I finally think I understand what they're all about, with their tent-revival-gospel meets indie rock in 2007 sound. That’s what I’m calling it, anyway (listen to St. John and tell me what you think?)
I kissed the kids at noon then stumbled out the room I caught a cab ran up a tab on 7th and flower
best recital I had to ruin missed my son's graduation punched the Nickles boy for taking his seat gets all that anger from me
still things could be much worse natural disasters on the evening news still things could be much worse we still got our health my paycheck in the mail
I promised to my wife and children I'd never touch another drink as long as I live but even then it sounds so soothing this will blow over in time this will all blow over in time
I'm just an honest man provide for me and mine I give a check to tax deductable charity organizations two weks paid vacation won't heal the damage done I need another one
still things could be much worse natural disasters on the evening news still things could be much worse we still got our health my paycheck in the mail
I promised to my wife and children I'd never touch another drink as long as I live but even then it sounds so soothing to mix a drink and sink into oblivion
I promised to my wife and children that accident left everyone a little shook up but at the meetings I felt so empty this will blow over in time this will all blow over in time
what song gets stuck in your head? and not just the annoying commerical jingles "what would you do for a klondike bar" or the annoyingly titillating "hips don't lie" chorus or any such thing, but songs that really haunt you?

I know your pain. My car has (I should probably speak in the past tense, but I'm still in denial that my car is gone) a shallow dash so the CD player sort of levers, and everything skips over every last pothole (of which there are many in the north east) and piece of gravel. Anyway, sorry to hear that your CD player ate your CD, as modern radio sucks really bad these days. I always wondered why annoying DJs think that listeners would rather hear their voices than music.
I don't think it's just people from southern Cali who say "the" in front of road names. I've heard it done in Arizona as well. But definitely not over here on the east coast. But I like going out west because it gives me an excuse to say "the" and pretend I blend in with everyone else. (Until I say something in my blatantly NY accent.)
seriously...I don't want to hear about how cool you think you are or how you think you single handedly made a band famous (one of the local djs talks like that all of the time).
ha ha ha... well you know us californians think the rest of the country has sexy "accents." :)
i am fed up with the cd player in my car because it takes half an hour of driving in the morning to warm it up enough so that the cd's don't stick or skip. perils of using cds in the car in canada! this tues I have an appt at the shop to replace the cd deck with one that plays & charges my i-pod and allows semi-fast scrolling & id tags on the dash. i'm psyched!!
the latest song that i can't get out of my head is mew's zookeeper's boy with that "are you my lady are you" chorus...

Fieldwork in Rwanda, accompanied by some Johnny Cash, et al. That sounds amazing. It's cool that you got to discover the nightlife and house music scene. It's never been my thing, but maybe I just need to go to Rwanda....:)
