WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

My chat with Lindsey Buckingham

Posted over 3 years ago
I was never a big Fleetwood Mac fan, so I was a little late coming to appreciate Lindsey Buckingham's genius. About 20 years actually - when his Out of the Cradle album came out. It was inventive and exciting and his concert was stunning - about a 1/2 dozen guitarists backing him up, multiple percussionists, just making an amazing racket in a small, defunct club in Phoenix. So I was seriously stoked when Under the Skin came out. But when I put it on, my first reaction was "What the fuck is this shit?" None of the noise I wanted, just what sounded like a collection of unfinished demos. But Show You How got um, Under My Skin, and while I won't say it is as good as his previous solo outings, I do like the understated intricacy of the album.Blatant plug:Here is my "interview":http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/ae/articles/1029buckingham1029.html with Lindsey for the Arizona Republic in Phoenix. And I'll weigh in with my thoughts on his concert on Wednesday or Thursday.

  1. Spencer Owen says Oh I do want to go see him. But it is over $50. Criminy. Buckingham's a hero of mine, no matter how inconsistent his work is. The heights are idiosyncratic pop at its finest.

  2. celtichris says So sad he had to choose to play Phoenix the same night as Pet Shop Boys, but, well, Mason, your wife and I will have fun. Maybe he'll wander back through sometime in the next couple years on a more convenient night. On a side note, I seem to have choked Mog-o-Matic with my music collection. It's been working on it for about 12 hours now and still nothing. Ach, well.

  3. Brett Schieber says I just read your interview. I'm incredibly jealous. Buckingham is a guitar god and is the most intense performer that I've ever seen. I saw him in Atlanta and Nashville on his recent tour and was in awe the entire time (except the "Vacation" song...sorry!). I'm a huge fan. Great interview!

  4. Sweet Lou Killbot says Thanks for reading - I was surprised. He was very polite, talkative and down-to-earth. I expected a lot more arrogance, especially after the "yelling at the crowd" incident the last time... So he's doing Holiday Road... Oh well. (Now that would be a cool Mac tune for him to bust out - I've got a recording somewhere of Mac's earliest tour rehearsals w/ Buckingham and Nicks and he does a great job on Oh Well and Green Manalishi).
