Music withdrawal

It's been about 2 months now as a non-music critic. I'm really missing going to shows - but on the other hand there haven't been too many I really wanted to see over the past couple months. I missed Crowded House - warmup for Coachella and their 1st gig back together in the states - that was the one I really regret. I missed Lindsey Buckingham, but I saw him 6 months ago. I did manage to catch Mor

McDowell Mountain goodness

Went to night one of the McDowell Mountain Music Festival and for the most part thoroughly enjoyed myself. The Neville Brothers were seriously funky - funkier than the last time I saw them - even if they did pretty much the same stuff I remember them playing 15 years ago - Iko Iko, Fire on the Bayou, Yellow Moon, Voodoo, Tell It Like It Is, Fever, etc. plus a killer version of Herbie Hancock's Cham

Probably should write a post...

It's been a couple months, and I said I'd post a link to my Pete interview... So here's the "link":http://www.azcentral.com/ent/music/articles/0225guitarheroes0225who.htmlAnd I have to say, as someone who has been harsh on the Who for the past 15 or so years, I've got to give them credit for the recent show at US Airways Center. While Daltrey's voice may have been rough at times, they really seeme

Why I love my job

I got to interview Pete Townshend on Thursday. It was via e-mail, so it wasn't as cool as it could've been.... but it was PETE "FUCKING" TOWNSHEND.I'll post it after it publishes, which won't be for a month or so, but I did want to share some thoughts...1) He's actually quite polite in his writing. I expected short answers with little or no personality, but he was verbose and thoughtful.2) The guy

Phil Alvin looks like JD Hayworth...

Not only does he look like Hayworth, but he makes the funniest faces while singing - making it look like he's straining to pinch a loaf while singing...But he can still sing! And, given the fact that the Blasters did a song dedicated to President Bush, I'll Be Glad When You're Dead, and talked about the power of unions its safe to say he doesn't agree with Hayworth on many issues. The biggest surp

Primus sucks (literally)

I've been a longtime Primus fan, but I have to say their recent show at Mesa Amphitheatre was sadly disappointing. They are trying to be a jam band and don't seem to know how to jam effectively. Every song was 10-minutes long (good), but the show was only 90 minutes long, no intermission (bad). The solos stretched out, but never seemed to go anywhere. With the Grateful Dead, there was always a sen

Public Enemy in Phoenix

They were supposed to play at the Marquee Theatre, but the promoter pulled the plug because of ticket sales. So Chuck and Flav played a free show in the parking lot of a local comic book store after a signing. Then they hit Hollywood Alley around Midnight and played a full show with their band on borrowed equipment. It was an amazing evening - they were genuinely, actively engaged with their fans a
