Some albums I have bought recently have faded fast, becoming nothing more than background music to my screenwriting marathons. Vancouver band 'Black Mountain's self titled album definitely doesn't fit into this category. Black Mountain's sound is exactly what it says on the box, "BLACK and MOUNTAINOUS". From the tongue in cheek sax built dig at the music industry of 'Modern Music' to the Sabbathesque guitar and meaty drum fills of 'Don't Run Our Hearts Around' through strolling psychedelic blues of 'Druganaut and 'Faulty Times' I emerged having experienced something real, not just a bunch of cool singles thrown together in fancy packaging.There are so many influences here you'll recognise. But they don't make 'Black Mountain' the album it is. Vision, intelligent lyrics and an oh-so obvious talent make 'Black Mountain' a band and listening experience to behold.Now to go back and sample the earlier incarnations of Black Mountain. Jerk With A Bomb, and The Pink Mountaintops. I'm interested in hearing more about them, and would appreciate some tips on what to sample from their back catalogs?
