Thankyou For The Music!

Posted over 5 years ago
20th November 1985... the night it all began. The night a wet behind the ears Beatles/T-Rex fan turned on the radio and found John Peel.In session that night were 'Half Man Half Biscuit'1. D'Ye Ken Ted Moult?2. Arthur's Farm / All I Want For Christmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit3. The Trumpton Riots4. Old TigeFour songs and the oddly soothing nasal tones of a scouse DJ is all it took. The next day was spent spreading the word around school, and the next show under my grossly outdated Action Man duvet, fingers rested on the record button of a cassette recorder. One ear on the nasal toned scouser and The Fall, the other listening out for my mother in case she rumbled me (school night).I wish i could thank the man personally, but sadly the opportunity has gone.Just the beginning of an endless list of bands i've discovered by listening to one man's radio show.THANKYOU FOR THE MUSIC!

  1. QueenofHell says RIP John Peel. Great post. He didn't influence me - at the age of 27 - as he did you older fellas - but I know he will be sorely missed.

  5. artAlexion says Unfortunately, here in the US, I didn't discover John Peel until about a year before he died. I thank him for the litte bit that I heard (and in doing so thank streaming internet radio, without which I never would have heard him or Gilles Peterson).

  7. Sureshot says I was lying in bed last night listening to the last hour of Peel Day. The moon was bright and filtering through the window blinds. Atmosphere by Joy Division kicked in to play. I laid there eyes fixed on the moon throughout the song and for about five minutes following it. Can't put the feeling into words... all i can say is it was one of those moments i'll never forget.

  9. Sureshot says I seem to remember listening to one of the sessions when they aired. Sheela Na Gig and Dress featured. I have it on tape somewhere. Raw and wild it is.
