Kenny Anderson aka King Creosote leads the Fence Collective, a record company working out of Fife, Scotland, who's acts are made up of a tight knit group of friends. Most notably himself and James Yorkston.
Over the last five years KC have put out over 20 recordings, the majority of them burned onto CDR's by Kenny himself and packaged with home made art. It's an amazing achievement for any act to get the recognition KC are getting with such self reliant methods, and an achievement only made possible by the quality of KC's music.
KC Rules OK is a collaboration between King Creosote and The Earlies, and is taken from an album the collective recorded. Kenny refers to himself and the rest of the collective as one-take-Jakes. It's their belief that if a song isn't worthy of a release after one take it never will be.
KC Rules OK showcases this belief in a marvelously atmospheric collection of simple and understated indie folk. Sounding like a Celtic 'Badly Drawn Boy' could have it's downsides you'd think. But it's exacly the opposite, I admire Kenny for not even attempting to hide his broad Scots accent like many others have done before him. Maybe this is just me but I detect a hint of Morrissey in the way he hold his notes. Let me know if this strikes you too. Alongside the humour and poignancy of his lyrics and the calm of the albums orchestral arrangements, Kenny's vocals are the most appealing thing.
The album isn't faultless, a couple of tracks are a little to bare for my liking, and in whole it's a bit of a slow burner. It'll take a good few listens to sink in. However, tracks like 'So Forlorn' backed by the beautiful harmonies of KT Tunstall, and 'Jumping at the Cats' a jaunty number that talks about scaring felines when naked are songs you could find yourself hitting the repeat button too.
KC Rules OK?
Not totally, but Kings of Scottish indie-folk no doubt.
I'm hooked...
