Bill Hicks: Man cursed with vision

Posted over 5 years ago
"The world is like a ride at an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it, you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question: Is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, 'Hey – don't worry, don't be afraid ever, because this is just a ride ...' And we ... kill those people. Ha ha, 'Shut him up. We have a lot invested in this ride. Shut him up. Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account and my family. This just has to be real.' It's just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok. But it doesn't matter, because – it's just a ride. And we can change it anytime we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money. A choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead, spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace. Thank you very much, you've been great."

[several gunshots ring out, Bill mimes being hit and falls to floor, motionless.] (Onstage closing comments of Bill Hicks Revelations special from 1993)

Hicks has been dead for over ten years but what's spooky is his words still ring true. I wasn't fortunate enough to have seen Bill perform live during his lifetime but I have seen countless tribute shows. No substitute... that's for sure but still refreshingly entertaining. Today I dug out my Hicks recordings and transferred them to i-Tunes and MOG. With Mr Hicks fully MOGified I got to thinking how cool it would be if he had a MOG page, what would he have to say about the state of world affairs, modern music and film etc today. David, I hereby propose the future development of the MOG spirit world. Dig out those ouija boards and lets have us a MOG seance. Bring back Bill before Bush Jr gets re-elected and Coldplay take over the world.Aww hell, if I can't bring him back here's the next best thing. You can watch the whole of "Bill Hicks, Sane Man" in five parts at You Tube. Here's the first...Ten minutes of pure comedic genius...Who are your top 5 stand-up comedians, living or dead? My list below.1: Bill Hicks2: Peter Cook3: Richard Pryor4: Eddie Izzard5: Billy Connolly

  5. mullytron says I saw Bill Hicks in Chicago in '94. He smoked the entire time. A complete comedic fire-breathing genius. (Like may comics) he did a lot of his regular bits, but who cares, he's awesome at it. I had a rough week when he died. If you like Bill Hicks, you got to put Doug Stanhope in the top 5, though. And that Sara Silverman's no slouch either. She's twisted, but who cares.

  6. Sureshot says I saw Stanhope in Edinburgh a couple of years ago. Enjoyed his show and definitely see the similarities. Silverman I keep meaning to check out but it's hard to find her material in the UK. I only know her from The Aristocrats (my favourite sections of the film were hers), and School Of Rock.

  10. slantera says I'm surprised nobdy has said, Chris Rock. On another note, the band, Tool, loved his work (Bill Hicks). They actually put a little bit of his material on their album, Aenima. He brought up a very good about drugs and music. I think I will have to start checking out his material. Thanx for sharing.
