Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs

Posted almost 6 years ago
Matthew Sweet has fallen under the radar for all but the most hardcore fan for a long time. But I'm not sure it's a good thing that music rags that have largely ignored Sweet's many (fantastic) post-Girlfriend albums actually noticing this because this is his weakest effort yet and in no way representative of his talents. I'm just baffled by this album. Why an album of covers? And it has to be asked --- Susanna Hoffs? I'm definitely missing the plot here. I'd recommend instead these Matthew Sweet albums - Girlfriend, 100% Fun, In Reverse, The Thorns collaborative album or the Japan-only release Kimi Ga Suki Life for the sublime track I Don't Want to Know - which alone makes it worth the import sticker price.

  2. Dave says I actually find the album kinda charming, like what these two would play sitting around in their living room. Sure, it's poppy and slight, but sometimes you just feel like a piece of candy, you know?

  3. SuperficialCat says Good point! Apparently the two were friends for ages and decided to do an album together, which is kinda nice. Sometimes some light poppy stuff is all you need.
