MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Artist:
Album: Artifact
Track:
(44)

Take off calls for something soothing, so I focused on breathing and calming my anxiety with…STS9. Then after we were steady onto…Tegan & Sara The Con.

While floating fast 37,000+ ft above the night-lights (that now look like little clusters of nebulas under the clouds)… Starflyer 59 The Fashion Focus (Thanks Mr. Marigold)

From the port to Grandma’s… Various R&B and remixes via XM radio in the background.

During a visit to the auction/swap meet/ flea market… Erykah Badu’s Mama’s Gun (one of my presents) & The Dirty Dozen Brass Band’s Buck Jump were found for $4.00 each!

The gathering (music playing - football watching - karaoke singing – toasting) area downstairs was full of the Blues, not only by me having to hear the family sing karaoke (Grandpa-in-law was hooked on singing Elvira, he’s a black man with a great voice, but Elvira!?)… Rick Fink and His Gas House Gorillas, Hot Monkey Love, William Clarke’s "Groove Time", along with the "Legend's of Blues" Box set. (All downloaded onto the laptop with thanks.)

Christmas Day… Music was in the background most of the time on Christmas, but that night I tuned into a nice moment with…Elvis and "If I Can Dream" (there’s a first for everything).

Thursday… Due to my on again, off again procrastination tendency, we missed out on a concert (or 3) from “The Bouncing Souls” playing at The Stone Pony. Since we decided to wait until we got to town to get tickets, we didn’t go because they had sold out. It was local and would’ve been fun but I’m not kicking myself over it.

A visit to the “big apple” (not the corporation…the city of New York) included…

Amy Winehouse (the music not herself) in “The Irish Pub”, among complaints, by the Irish tenders (equipped with a heavy accent) of hearing too much Johnny Cash on the jukebox.

Miscellaneous pop songs were heard in the commercial area of Midtown Manhattan as I peaked in and out of some very cool shops. I was honestly too mesmerized by all the bigness and pretty lights surrounding famous faces to notice the music during the visit.

On the way to the airport… U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” came from the speakers, well timed, after a brief conversation about religion. Thankfully the conversation was brief because I have an aversion to discuss religion with preaching hypocrites.

In flight heading (thankfully) to the warm and sunny south… Tokyo Police Club's "A Lesson in Crime". Check out their talent in Citizen’s Of Tomorrow…

One of the things about music I will never tire of is the association of music to events of our lives. Especially meaningful things in life. I am sure it is a pretty common theme amoung music nerds. This post brings us with you on one of those journys. Great post. Thanks for bringing us with.

And whats up with the sweet tune? Very nice...almost MMWesqe. I like it and I am sure you just have not had a chance to load it to darkside yet. ;) x 4

Thanks for taking the journey MariG! Glad you liked! I think about how many people pick up on the music wherever they may be too...prob not that common among the general pep but among the tunefully inclined...very much.

I will certainly be adding what I have from STS9. And MMW...I remember when we came across your post featuring them! I'd say they have a _tad_ more of an electronic thing going on but yes...very MMWesqe.

Nice post.. a little "Elizabethtown" if I'm not being too corny - one of the things I love about travelling is the music that provides the background for the experience, and then, years later, has that ability to bring back memories..

As I approach my 1st anniversary on January 13, and get ready to head out on a trip to Vancouver to do some skiing, I'm reminded of a song that kept creeping its way into the conciousness of my wife and myself.. "It's A Wonderful World" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.. we did the Hawaii honeymoon, came across the song several times, and spent a day at the beach where Iz's ashes were scattered.. ..and it still puts a lump in my throat when I hear it! If there is a better song to evoke a honeymoon memory, I don't know what it is :)

Very well put together, H. But enough about the new avatar... Great idea for a post, and the photos are so evocative. I really love the tune, as well. Oh, and..."Thankfully the conversation was brief because I have an aversion to discuss religion with preaching hypocrites"...Zing!

A lovely cut-up of a post. Yours sounds like a journey worthy of epic poems. The pictures are also very inspiring like an invitation to travel with you. If that's the case, where to, O Sunny Captain, my Sunny Captain?

Great post - music is so great at punctuating our lives, heightening meaning, and even giving some to certain situations that would be sorely lacking on their own... like a trip to the airport... Cheers! Love the tune as well.

You've discovered Erykah Badu! Yay!(Or at least discovered Mama's Gun) Whenever I go on a trip I GOTTA have my choons. Sounds like a great time(except the religious discussion, YUCK!). Liking both song you posted.

Tyler - That downstairs area was most definitely jammin’ except for that karaoke! Thanks for the sympathy and for stopping by.

Mike - I had to switch it up on you, didn’t I? You and you’re emotions…tsk tsk ; ) ; )

Wdog - Thanks so much for sharing your story and the song. I was just speaking of the song on another post, just in early November a good girlfriend of mine walked down the [outside grassy] isle, to this version of “Over the Rainbow” and it puts a lump in my throat when I hear it now too. Music definitely has that ability with memories, some good and some you’d rather forget, no doubt. (Scents do that with me too.) And love “Elizabethtown” too, thanks for the reminder.

FluxCap - Well…thanks for the compliment on the togetherness, although I wish I were more consistent on the album title quotations. (details…details) I also forgot about an extremely amusing song brought back to mind later in the NY visit (I’ll have to follow up on that 1) And what…did you think I was going to keep my Happy New Year tiara on till like July or something?! I may switch it again soon…brace yourself!

Bartleby – And that’s a lovely cut up of a comment! If I were poetic I would’ve surely included one as well. Glad to have you on the journey…and next we’ll be heading where there’s more beach than concrete, that’s for sure!

Mr. Morrison – “heightening meaning, and even giving some to certain situations that would be sorely lacking on their own” Yes...well said! There were many times I tuned in to the music to put me at ease (and to spark a lighter conversation, like "The Joshua Tree" is classic!). It’s so good like that! Glad you enjoyed the track!

Augusts1 – I’ve been onto Erykah and knew Mama’s Gun was a must have, so I was delighted to have it. Still need more of her though! Glad you tuned into both songs…Tokyo Police Club could use a bit more acknowledgment.

Mike – make that same mental note for me…I’m happy with my position as CEO. ; ) ; )

Wow, I feel like I just took a trip. :-) Nice post, SunnyD. Sounds like it was a great trip, both sonically and activity-wise. I was getting mental snapshots of images to go with the music. You made me remember my two favorite plane takeoff / plane landing soundtrack songs: Bowie's "Station to Station" and Kraftwerk's "TransEurope Express." (I know, the both involve trains, not planes, but they work for me.)

Hi Lady Miss. Ian! It's truly special you just popped by...In the comment above your's I _started_ to say "I'm glad all the fellas dropped by and all...but where's my ladies at!?" I removed it, guess I didn't want to beg. Thanks for taking the trip, it's a fun bunch we have here. And I'm gonna have to check out that "TransEurope Express" Maybe I've heard it but it's not coming to me. And hey planes/ trains/ or automobiles all go good with music. Thanks for the lovely comment!

How did you manage to keep track of all of that? Awesomeness. One of my favorite parts about traveling is all of the downtime when there's nothing better to do but listen to tunes :O)

Yes traveling and music go so well together and I guess it's that memory of mine that helped to keep track, sometimes it can be a pest though. (I'm having a difficult time with memories as we speak...excuse me while I get this lump out of my throat)

Nice to see you over here and thanks for reprezentin' da ladies too!
