Positive.
Jay-Z, being the first ever hip-hop to headline Glastonbury, was subject to a fair amount of criticism, but that didn't stop the Grammy award winning rapper from coming out and giving a "world class show."
Many cite the music and arts festival -the world's largest - held in Pilton, England a rock stronghold.
Noel Gallagher of Oasis claimed that hip-hop had no place at the festival, even unwittingly opened the set, reports the BBC.

Where's the love?
Before Jay started his set, a short film montage was played on the huge screens surrounding the structure.
It began with a quote from Gallagher who, on hearing the organiser Michael Eavis had booked the Brooklyn born rapper to play the festival's top slot said: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
The film then included a series of images which included the Queen, Prime Minister Gordon Brown and George Clooney made to look like they were endorsing Jay-Z's appearance.

Jay addressed the issues directly during his set. As he neared the end of his performance he said: "So, I hear you guys didn't want me here tonight?
"They said you weren't into hip-hop. One question Glastonbury, 'Where is the love?'"
Leading up to the show even started, Jay-Z fired back at the nay sayers, as previously reported and explained to the press "I've never actually experienced anything like that before."
Jay in classic form took the issue into his own court and made it something which strengthen his performance rather than hinder it.

Any Moggers see his perform?

Well, I can sympathize with both sides. If my fest-o-phobia was cured, I would not want to attend a rock festival and sit through hip-hop acts. On the other hand, probably a fair number of festival attendees would like that.

Yeah i pretty much loved it...It looked and sounded great on T.V. (Even if i could afford it i would never go to a festival ,least of all Glastonbury) I think i "got it"...He's like the "all rounder" of Rap/Hip hop right? The Ben Elton if you will..self deprecating by rapper standards, with"a little bit a politics" creepin in..as in "Fuck Bush" .."big-up" Obama..offset by the mawkish "sexy/love" stuff "Make the Song Cry" (sheet!) Seriously,he reminded me of early eighties, when Grand Masterflash and the Sugar Hill was big..it was pretty much my favourite stuff. Along with "Talking Heads" and ,of course "Genius of Love" ("Tom Tom Club") was the backing track of choice for quite a while..JayZee partly employs that "old school" approach it seems..plus the systematic deconstruction/karaoke montage/collage they go for. With everything from "Back in Black" "AC/DC" to current pop tracks like "Umberella"..Streams and streams of words and individual, seemingly spontaneous raps leading into songs..The on-stage visuals were astonishingly good. The band, came over to me (bear in mind we had just seen Amy Winehouses' spaced out Jazz set) like a sort of Hip Hop "Big Band",like Buddy Rich or Stan Kenton bizarrely backing "Public Enemy"! I am no expert,i really did lose interest after early "Public Enemy" and "NWA",when all the "bling" and the "hoes" took over, but,I'd guess that this guy is the best of the bunch.I think he is going to sell a lot of C.D's in Britain next week..one of them might even be to me!

I have had the pleasure of seeing him once in concert and he put on an incredible show. I can only imagine the energy from this festival making his music that much better

Like Chris, I saw it from the comfort of the sofa and was blown away by how good he was. He's got a mother of a band behind him - the rhtyhm section is as good as it gets. The way he mixed up the set with hardcore hip-hop and more melodic fare was really good and yes, the visuals were superb. He also threw in a rap over "Rehab" which unfortunately got lost - I'd love to know what he was saying after having just watched her in a state of I'm not sure what. If she wasn't stoned then the doctors really have their work cut out. It was very clear that Jay is a world-class act and had every right to own the stage, with which the very large crowd agreed. Noel G. is just an ignorant twa.

It's all over YouTube now - just search Jay Z and Glastonbury. Here's a representative clip.

I just watched a clip of him opening with Wonderwall and 99 Problems. If that dude doesn't feed off of the negativity...then I just don't know. He completely threw that show in the faces of everyone who said he didn't belong there. I am majorly impressed with that dude.

Troy - couldn't agree more. As a result of the show I downloaded a bunch of the tunes that set me alight in Saturday. It's really interesting how much he's changed them to fit Glastonbury. He's definitely one of the talented ones.

Man, I don't know how anyone could doubt that Jay would have an incredible show; that's what he does for a living. Yeah, I've been to rap concerts where it's mostly the dude waving his hand, and walking across the stage, but the dudes who live off these shows earn their money.
I saw Black Thought sing (yes sing) some Marvin and some Al Green, and Kweli got his Eurythmics on at a concert I went to in Chicago. You never know what you're gonna get from a seasoned performer.

Uh yeah. Apparently ya bwoy from Oasis has never heard of Rick Ruben. Hip Hop and Rock married a long time ago. Actually, if we need to do a little history digging again (must we though really? Can't cats do their own research) rock, hip hop, most popular music, has black roots. Long conversation we can have elsewhere but the point is it all comes from a similar birthplace.
I love good music. I think most of us on here do too. And we have something in common with all those people at Glastonbury chanting Jay lyrics verbatim.
Maybe N.E.R.D. would have set better with Gallagher seeing as they are the perfect example of hip hop and rock.
Although I can't front, if 50 came out on stage at Glastonbury, I might have to talk about it.

Carlitos - 50 headlined the Reading rock festival a couple of years ago and literally got bottled off the stage. Not becaue it was rap, but because he was so bad.

It would certainly seem that in the music world now, where hip hop is the stadium filling monster rock once was, Jay-Z holds court with polished ease. He looks big as life on stage there, owning the stage. Not like in the old days when you'd see hip hop acts at a big venue, and they just seemd dwarfed by the whole venue. What's the poker saying? Go big or go home indeed...
My Trusted MOGs
I agree with Troy Powers. Jay-Z handled it the right way. Whatever he didn't throw back at the haters was worn as armor. He showed them who was running things.

fuck noel gal. i was there, up close. jay-z killed it.

Definitely Ingram. My point exactly. Never heard about 50 getting bottled off the stage but I am not surprised. Jay is fresh, as Hyman has ever so eloquently re-enforced. If someone weak like 50 was even on that stage let alone headline, I would have an issue.
Skills Skills Skills.

For what it's worth, thanks for the armchair review!- Derm,

you can add that last 't' it's all good. In this case, I think it's necessary- Troy,
I agree. MAJOR respect for the guy Some men are binded by circumstance some men bind circumstance to fit their will Jay is showing his true colors, the shades of a legend.- Contra:
It would certainly seem that in the music world now, where hip hop is the stadium filling monster rock once was Very good observation. I like the cut of your jib.- Carlitos,
50 headlining Glatonbury is a nightmare! It'd never happen. They'd let Dave Matthew's Band or some shit headline before that.fuck noel gal. i was there, up close. jay-z killed it.
That kicks major ass you got to see it though. I bet it was one of Jay more monumental performance. For some reason I forgot you were going or nobody told me, in either case do I sense a review? Hook it up, yo!
Anyways, what's Noel's beef?
Wonder what the reaction on his face was when he saw Jay working the crowd over, getting more people moving and shaking than an average Oasis show.
Speaking of! When was the last time Oasis.. meh nevermind. Noel's just being a turd.
