Canadian singer-songwriter, poet and novelist Leonard Cohen has scheduled nearly 40 European performances this Summer. The tour, the first for the 73-year-old in nearly 15 years, will not include any dates in the United States.

As previously reported, Cohen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (March 10) for his status among the "highest and most influential echelon of songwriters."

Currently Cohen is working on his 12th studio album, which is expected to be released later this year via Columbia.

Cohen's last album, 2004's Dear Heather(Columbia) featured more female lead singing and a marked increase in read poetry over sung lyrics. The 73 year old Canadian artist's style appears to be diverging from that of 2001's Ten New Songs leaning towards his prolific skills as poet.

No mention of any American dates, but we'll keep ya posted.

Lack of US dates doesn't surprise me at all as he has always been more appreciated in Europe and elsewhere than he was in the US. IN the US he was always tagged as a pop songwriter who wrote poetry rather than a poet who wrote songs. Also his last several records have fared rather poorly in the US in terms of sales.

As an American, I find myself saying "Ouch" once again.

I hope the European tour is a warm-up. Still, I can't deny what starspring says, and doubt that Cohen regards playing for his most loyal fans as mere tryout dates.

i don't know anything about his music except that he wrote 'hallelujah'. and for that, i will be forever grateful.

in addition, i am very much grateful for you sending the kind words along with the mog-goodies. i was also surprised to learn "sturgell has a first name?!?" thanks!

Yeah, it's too bad he won't be coming to the States, but I was thinking of going to Europe this summer...maybe I'll try to catch a show.

Cohen will be at the Montreal Jazz Festival (Place des Arts venue) in June, but I won't attend; I can't afford it. Tickets sell from $151.35 to $226.35...

And yet another reason (albeit very small) to move to Europe. :P

lol @ Scotch. I hope I can get tickets for the Dublin show, I'd pretty much given up hope of seeing Leonard Cohen. If it's extortionate prices though I might not be able to :(
