Modest Mouse Singer: Hurt Me

Posted almost 5 years ago
Modest Mouse singer Isaac Brock began hitting himself in the face with his microphone, then proceeded to draw a knife and cut his own chest during a performance at Ramkota Exhibit Hall in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Sunday evening, March 18, a source at Epic Records, the label the group records for confirmed to MOG today. The incident was first reported by Pitchfork; one of their readers, Joshua Cole, told the indie music site that after deliberately bonking his head, Brock "then walked back to his amp, grabbed a pocket knife, and cut a 12 inch cut across his chest. His assistant had to grab the knife and stop him. He was bleeding the rest of the concert, and later fell off the stage into the barrier before singing in the crowd."Modest Mouse's new album, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, was released today (March 20). The group just began a two-plus month tour.Brock, performing "Float On" after said event. ??don't worry even if things end up a bit too heavy??For more info:http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/41806/Isaac_Brock_SelfMutilates_at_South_Dakota_Gig[PF]http://pitchforkmedia.com/page/news/Isaac_Brock_SelfMutilates_at_South_Dakota_Gig#41806

  5. max says hmm, it;s weird, that seems like an old isaac brock kind of move, yet his new music and recent interviews have made him out to be on the mend from his semi-psychotic, depressive tyraids...though i want that old MM back, I hope he gets better!

  6. chucky says Scary. And what Max said. I just got done reading an interview with him and he seemed almost embarrased by past actions and very normal.

  7. davydude says this is somewhat upsetting to me, i personally think that someone should've stopped the show for more than one reason 1.i'm sure it would've been healthier for him to get off the stage where hundreds of people were staring at him so that maybe he could talk over what was going on 2.if the music was in anyway bringing back memories or old moods, at least the music would be over for that night 3.honestly, why make him finish the set up? money?! i think when someone is calling out for help, it should be answered more swiftly, i hope things get better for isaac

  8. Sturgell says Oh com'on you guys, don't be so mellow dramatic! He's an artist(and an adult), let him express himself. How I figure it is that after all the money and having Marr in your band and everything, you'd have to goto such lengths to keep things interesting. He was in Sioux Falls, have any of you ever been there?

  10. drewfonts says Reminds me of this interview with Tom Petty I was reading recently: "The energy of the crowd is insane...it's the biggest jolt of adrenaline. It's very hard to explain. You know the old story about the woman lifting the car off her kid? It's in that realm. You can actually hurt yourself and not know it." Iggy Pop was cutting himself in front of crowds back in the 70's, so I guess there's nothing new under the rock & roll sun. Call it artistic expression or whatever, but typically it ain't a good sign.

  11. burninghammer00 says i think it's more of a him having a substance abuse problem, rather then a publicity stunt. regardless if your a fan of the band is it really necesary for him to go and do things like this. it just gives the naysayers another bullshit reason to attempt to discredit him and the band. i've read that their live shows haven't been up to par lately and that brock has been pretty lackluster i hope that's not true, especially with a gem like marr willing to join them.

  14. bmaybee says Ha, good soap opera piece folks. He was trying to cut the electrical tape around the base of the mike, because the mike sounded like crap (hence getting frustrated throughout the show and finally banging his head with it). They always say, never work with a blade turned up, but Isaac hasn't always been the smartest. It was more of a work related injury if you ask me. Well they replaced the mike and things sounded a little better, but this was far from some near suicide downward spiral rock and roll thing. Goddam suckers, you all want your rockstars to be tragic, you're eating this up.
