Amy Winehouse A Closet Racist?

I've noticed this video has been making it's rounds online so I figured I'd share.Filmed by Wino's husband Blake, in it Amy and a friend have a little sing song of a pretty damn racist. Sure, people say some stupid stuff and that doesn't all the time mean their a racist, but you'd figure people in the spotlight would watch what they say. ??In a perfrect world,?? I guess well, the real world isn't P.C. and celebrities say ni**er sometimes do stupid stuff and kids see it and think it's cool. That's life. What do you think? Does this make ol' Amy a racist?

    Jo says I understand she has made some apology of some sort for this, but still I really wonder how far off their heads Blake and Amy are for making these videos and then somehow getting this crap leaked to the press... perhaps the substances really have them believe now that there is no such thing whatsoever as bad publicity (except for their obituaries?). Is it time to count down to these people's premature demise? Is it time to have these people sectioned under the mental health act? Or is it simply time to turn our backs as we see these people self-destruct? If anyone has the answer...

    Celia Chavez says well, considering how out of it she is often demonstrated to be, i don't see how one would be surprised if she didn't watch what she said. and this video hardly qualifies as "the spotlight". it's a shame that she is married to someone who finds it amusing to not only publicly humiliate her but also record it for posterity. regardless of all that, she is one of the most talented young artists we have, and i hope she can recover from all this BS and get down to business.

    earthman says well what can you say? its a sign of the times, the badder it gets the more the public like it, TV is full of people getting abused, embarrassed, put down. How long is it till we buy tickets to watch executions? I we all stopped watching the shit the shit wouldn't rate and that would stop it. Yep it is life but we make it like that, we just don't look when the neighbors getting robbed or whatever. We go to war and watch it on TV. I say get to know your neighbors, build some social capital so we can help the Amy Winehouse's of the world. Don't go see her live or buy her albums so she cant afford to be such a waster. Her closet is so full of baggage she cant bear to open it. I hope she makes it through!

And I regret to say that you, me, Sturgell, and Celia have just helped to perpetuate this sort of garbage by posting and commenting about it. It's in our make-up as humans, apparently. I suppose you are right. Tickets to executions may be just around the corner. The reassuring thing is that each of us, I feel sure, would be embarrassed to put in an appearance at one. At least, that's the way it feels in June of 2008. Right now, I think I'll go seek out a post about ??music??.

    Jo says My guess is, though, that NOTW obtained this home video after paying someone from within the direct vicinity of Amy & Blake (possibly even either of both of them themselves?) for it (the proceeds possibly to fund someone's 'needs'...?). Should NOTW take some responsibility?

    changling says Damn Sturgell I'm glad u posted this, though its doing the rounds I'd somehow missed it, yes we shouldn't perpetrate by watching and commenting but I for 1 am glad to know having spent good money on her recent albums I'm proper gutted, information is knowledge, I think every Swinehouse fan should see it, yes I love her music but I will think thrice b4 giving her any more props or dough. I always knew she was a dumb ass and any apology or excuse she comes up with is too little too late. We all have personal views that we probably wouldn't want shared with the world but as the hoe has dated black men in the past and her husband looks like he''ll be doing time for real they all best watch their arses as these things have a tendency to bite back when least expected. That said when people say racism is a thing of the past they should see this and explain why educated youth brought up with priviledge and in a multicultural society think that this is acceptable behaviour even behind closed doors. Dumb old smack/ crack heads...they never learn Peace & Love XXX

    trend says I'm with Belle, can we really make the Winehouse story any worse?? I don't think that her being racist is really going to change peoples disgust for her, and for those who like her music, they seem to have looked past everything else. As for me, she could be racist, she was terribly inebriated, and when you're that far gone, your true colors usually come through. I say, "live and let live" or in her case "live and let die." Since that seems to be the direction she's heading.

I hate racism, but I gotta say- it seems fine for the media to use words like "white trash" and "redneck" but you can never say that other word which no one is allowed to say- and the hipocracy of it all , is listen to any rap song and its mentioned more times than you can count.     CarlitosBlogWay says I echo Celia's thoughts. She is obviously high as a kite, and has no idea what the fu@! she is saying. I wouldn't trust her to be able to spell her own name in that state. She obviously emulates many black artists in her music and as her inspiration to music like many musicians. It is natural seeing as most popular music today originated from black music. Forgive me for being blunt however these are things that I hope we all know. There is a serious fascination with people of socio-economic disparity, by people who tend to be of a higher socio-economic class. Furthermore, there tends to be a correlation between the separation of these classes and skin color. While it is not so simple, atypically the social symbols we see are black and white (That is an entendre but I was referring to skin color). We can dissect all of that later if anyone wants to continue discourse here on "that"... But I said all that to say this. She is a white kid fascinated with colored kids. Like a lot of white kids are. And then they get high, and say some dumb innocent shit that is, and quite unfortunately, truly thoughtless. If there is anyone that should truly be questioned, it is her husband BLAKE. Sounds like he is the one pushing them to do it, and filming it, all the while swearing on her life that he isn't. Someone question that dude.

    Rawkkiddoh says I have to agree with Carlitos 100%. Instead of looking at the fact that she is singing these songs, how about we get her some help. I would start by getting her to leave that ass of a husband (if you want to call him that) and start from there. Quite often when a celebrity has an addiction the public is the first to damn them. However if it were a loved one who had that addiction, they in turn would do everything they could to get them help. I do not think until someone really steps in and looks out for Amy's she will continue to spiral downwards.

    Spike says extraordinarypoems, that's a wonderful poem. But I have to say something about it that is tangential to the post. Like many contemporary poems, it feels like prose that has been put into little lines like a poem but with out a poetic form. As prose, it's great, but to deem it a poem creates a pretense that is a burden. Ezra Pound once wrote, "Music rots when it gets too far from the dance. Poetry atrophies when it gets too far from music." There are many different possible poetic forms besides traditional pre-20th century forms, and this poem could benefit from being more formal. Feel free to shoot me. :=)

    extraordinarypoems says Worth considering, Spike. But then I think poetry comes in so many shapes and sizes. And this is definitely a collection of fragmented images (of memories, words, faces, thoughts, etc. which are often central to poetry.) An invitation to shoot you. I don't r.s.v.p. but you are in the crosshairs evidently cause this poem is a weapon without your approval or embrace or my willingness to aim it at your well-intentioned face. T. :>)

    extraordinarypoems says Yes --- several. An it's an Unbending Dream, by the way -- a phrase I borrowed (with permission) from one of the poets who submitted work for the collection. Look for "Where I'm From" by Tamara Miles, "Home is Where My Mother Is," "Where I Was When Vincent Van Gogh Died, and others. And I'd like to see your poems!

    I saw this video when it was posted sometime ago in another forum and honestly I feel Amy is misguided by individuals who do not have her best interests. I have no idea of Amy's true intent with this video but drugs here seem to have inhibited her behavior.

    Don't you think though some of us are racist to a certain extent? I dislike people who are ignorant because they fail to see more of me than just that the fact that I am black. Does that make me a racist for feeling  like that? If so then, I am a racist.

    If Amy Winehouse decided to just call me the N word without knowing who I truly am then I would say she is more ignorant than racist. If she called me a feminist without knowing that I am not that but a womanist then I would say she is ignorant without knowing the difference between a womanist and feminist.

    Feminist = white women liberals

    Womanist = women of color who are liberals and do not agree with all of the what is behing the feminist movement (I am a womanist)

    Just my take on this complex issue but giving you another spin how I looked at it.

    She is a soul that needs prayer and I hope she finds the direction that she needs! I am praying for her sincerely because the press is making me sick with how they keep on reporting about her. I wish they would stop it and let me know what is going on with the economy!

    I agree. Some of us are racist and some of us understand that society is racist. It's just something we all have to deal with, but that doesn't mean you can be a jerk about it. 

    Seriously though, I do think everyone is racist; we're just all at different levels of accepting and coping with it.

    I agree with you 100%. I know I am because it is a fact of life.

    I wish people were more honest about it and would at least come to terms of listening and being patient with one another. That would help begin to open doors of communication to our differences.

    I honestly do not mind sharing about how I feel as an outcast in the world but I have to deal with so much stupidity that sometimes I hide because it is hard expressing the hurt and pain I experience as a minority in the world.

    So much miseducation for all of us! I honestly do try and I try not to overly react sometimes. That is why I have to take a step back and breathe before responding to some racist things I have personally experienced because I think I would probably be killed for the reactions I may provoke. You know the term *chill pill* ? My friends and I use that to say CALM down and don't do something stupid that may get us killed.

    Hopefully people will relisten (or read) to Obama's speech on racism because it eloquently put to words how I feel living in this world.

    I read a lot of scholarly works on how to deal with racism, racism in this world, etc. but I always know in the end that no one will understand it unless you experience it or try to at listen *get it*.
