WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Dimmu Borgir, KISS, Jello Biafra & ME!

Posted about 1 year ago
A while ago, "I implored you Metalhead Moggers out there to weigh in on Dimmu Borgir,":CH a Norwegian black metal band who some argue is one of the best bands in metal today.Overall your response was mixed. Some folks went as far as to say they liked Dimmu and think they're great, others just don't seem to have the palate for it. I think we all agreed these guys are one of the hardest working bands in metal.Myself? I wasn't too sure, so I decided to check out their live show. The following is my verdict: Dimmu Borgir played with Behemoth and Keep of Kalessin last Monday, April 14th at the Warfield in San Francisco. It was a last minute thing, my buddy had an extra ticket. We ended up missing the first two bands so I'm going to cut right to the chase. These guys know how to control the stage. Lead singer Shagrath came out wearing a dress, but it was more along the lines of Pinhead from Hellraiser than a Vera Wang. Not something you see everyday. "Click here to see for yourself":SDLet me elaborate what I mean when i say stage control. These guys come out with ghostly face paint, torches as props, decked out in ghastly inch long spikes all over their arms and legs, giving everyone in the audience a menacing ghoulish stares as if they're about to stick out a forked tongue through a guy's skull or something. They come out not as men, but as some type of unholy sirens singing the songs of sin and evil. It really is a trip checking them out live. Even if you're not into the music, which many people aren't, you still can get a kick out of the stage show and the corresponding mayhem in the mosh pit(which I saw more than a few guys come out of with bloodied faces).Technically, they're really an amazing band. They're music is a blend of just straight up brutal metal at breakneck speeds with classical Norwegian folk melodies played on a synth which makes for a super eerie backdrop. These guys really do pound the hell(literally) out of their instruments, but they manage to play really beautiful and thoughtful melodies while doing so. To do what these guys do night after night has to be draining. Nobody can deny their abilities. But what does it all mean? The satanic symbolism, the Viking elements, the strange garb? What's their entire trip all about?I looked over and noticed that I was standing right next to Jello Biafra. I decided to ask him what he thought, because I was having a hard time digesting it all.??Me and Jello in a really poor quality pic??Sturg: "Hey Jello, Who'd you come here to see tonight?"Biafra: "Dimmu Borgir"Sturg: "What do you think about metal, or rather this type of metal becoming more mainstream?"Biafra: "Auhhg(inaudible) yeah this stuff is really catching on."Sturg: "What did you think about the show tonight?"Biafra:"There were a lot of lights"(The venue was flooded with strobes, and other various light much like you see at big stadium shows, but these guys were kind of overdoing it)Biafra:"(continued) It was like a KISS show or something."Then it all started to make sense. Dimmu Borgir is all really just the Norwegian take on KISS! Think about it, it's all there: ??They're dangerous, scare your parents and nobody really understands them but you!??So this is what KISS is in 2008? Overtly Satanic, extreme in every sense of the word, foreign and with much more menacing spikes. Maybe it is just that simple.[SD]http://www.baronsamedi.fr/images/004shagrath_ogrrr.jpg[CH]http://mog.com/Sturgell/blog_post/152204

  1. brandarius says OMG - it's Jello all grown up! You are the dope, Sturgell. I want to love Dimmu Borgir but I can't...then again KISS never did it for me either. Not that they are not brilliant musicians....cause this has got to take some skill!

  2. Universalis says ° ° ° Great post, i love the "nail-socks" !! indeed Kiss born today would be much more aggressive than they were in 1974, but for that time it was the most delightful horror show available along with Alice Cooper's. But then came the Sex Pistols... // quote : They're dangerous, scare your parents and nobody really understands them but you! // That happens at every generation ! Old Rock'n'roll was satanic, even early jazzmen were regarded as monsters. Cultural shock is the essence, tell them they're too old to really understand, until it will come back to you, 20 or 40 years later :)))))))))))))

  3. Augusts1 says Wow, Universalis is ALIVE! Where you been dooooood? Adam, that's too cool Jello was standing right beside you & you got to talk to him. You're turning into quite the hipster, haha!

  4. gspotrecords says That was well worth the visit to your blog. They seem a most logical extension of Kiss, but without having seen the pictures you posted, I wouldn't have been able to, eh, 'picture' it accurately. Not my thing, but very very well done I say.

  5. GarageRock says Marilyn Manson, GWAR, Slipknot....every couple of years it seems someone takes a page out of that blueprint. I loved KISS when I was younger, but could care less about them now....tastes have changed dramatically. I went to see KISS with Aerosmith a couple years back for nostalgic purposes and we actually left in the middle of the show lol....times have changed.

  6. Sturgell says gspotrecords & brandarius - Thanks for the encouraging words Universalis - Yeah, where have you been! good to see you back making the rounds. Augusts1 - NO WAY. I'm not a hipster, I eat hipsters. GarageRock- Times have very much changed, my friend. That's all they really do.

  9. ShawnaMarie89 says Do you ever watch Metalocalypse? There's an episode where the lead singer works at a fast food joint called "Dimmu Burger." Hah, I found that entertaining. And yes Duluth is pretty. But living here makes you take it for granted :(

  10. Dr Locrian says I love Dimmu Borgir--they're a bona-fide metal institution. The thing to remember is that coming from the perspective of most moggers (I'm gonna make a big stereotyping leap and assume there just aren't many metalheads out there), they're not going to get past the over the top-ness of this kind of metal. They'll likely say, "hey, I'm not scared or offended, they've failed in their mission." But that's the thing I love about black metal--the willingness to look silly and just COMMIT to your role-playing. Because that's what it is. Think of it as method acting. And from the other side, the metal audience, Dimmu Borgir's great but there's a lot more interesting stuff happening all over the world at this moment, a real groundswell of amazing music. Case in point--California is practically the capital of the US black metal scene: Leviathan/Lurker of Chalice, Xasthur, Weakling, Saros, Ludicra. Up in the 206 area code are Wolves in the Throne Room. And the French bands simply rule Mordor right now: Antaeus, Deathspell Omega, Alcest, Blut Aus Nord, Spektr, Peste Noire, Monarch!. Phew. There's a lot more where they come from, but my main point is that Dimmu Borgir is just the tip of the bloody sword.

  11. Dr Locrian says Ooh, one more thing. Have you heard the new Leviathan, Massive Conspiracy Against All Life? THAT is the biggest release in my book of the last month. Also, Meshuggah's Obzen is crazy tight too.

  12. Sturgell says Wow, Doc! You really know your metal. I did catch Wolves In The Throne room about a few months ago and it was amazing. Maybe I should do a review about that show.

  13. Dr Locrian says Do review it! I missed them when I still lived in the Bay Area. I've heard nothing but raves about their live show--and it would be great to see more metal coverage on MOG.

  14. Sturgell says true story: my buddy got in a fight with Jello about a week before I interviewed him. small world.

  15. missedexit says In my mind there's not much difference 'tween KISS and DB. Bring back the days of VENOM and Celtic Frost/Hellhammer, of blast beats and blackest metal. True black metal doesn't need a stage show, or all that corpse paint, in my mind. But then again, only I inhabit my mind. You can't go wrong with Jello, a visionary and still remaining on the scene, as DK tries to live on w/out him, in a piss poor version, to say the least. Bottom line, you enjoyed yourself, right?

  16. Sturgell says Sure I had a good time, but I can have a good time at a funeral or a Boston show(true stories). I'm a firm believer in the "only boring people are bored" credo

  17. brz says Sturgell- excellent post. the comparison to KISS is a good one, but, like Dr Locrian said, Dimmu is just the tip of the sword - especially as far appearance goes. i think missedexit hit the nail on the head with the mention of Venom, Celtic Frost, and Hellhammer. DB and Cradle of Filth are just the most popular (and some would say, worst examples) of something that's been going on for a long time. "here's a link ((NSFW))":http://www.zonaunderground.com/default.asp?seccion=detalle_nodo&id=100375&s=8 to some entertaining scare your parents photos. somewhere there's another set of 10, all equally ridiculous photos. i'll keep looking to see if i can find them. that's cool that you got to hear Jello's two cents, and that you didn't have to fight him (that's a story i'd like to hear) to get it. keep up the good work. peace brz

  18. Konkrypton says I don't keep up on metal, though some of the stuff that makes it into the mainstream I like: Judas Priest, AC/DC, KISS, for example. That being said, it's hard to take KISS seriously ever since Gene took his makeup off and has a reality show on TV.

  19. Lady Miss Ian says Gotta say Dr. Loc upthread hit the nail on the head regarding commitment. You can't just put on a cape and be a half-assed superhero, just as you can't just throw on some leather and be a half-assed metal god. You've gotta go for it. I think the big attraction is that, unlike a lot of bespectacled, bearded indie rockers who look like every guy you see on the bus thoughtfully listening to his ipod, these guys DON'T look or act like the guy next door. Well, they might, if the guy next door sacrifices puppies to satan, but he'd probably still help you jump start your car on a cold morning.

  23. Hermes says Interesting post. I'm not into Death and Black Metal but some of my friends are and they like Dimmu Borgir a lot or at least liked - their name is known to me through them since many years, but maybe they became mainstream since then. They sure would laugh about the comparison to Kiss, as those are some real soft puppies compared to Death metal, but maybe you're right and Kiss has been the hardest and most shokcing thing at their time - which was long before my time. But well, when will the escalation of hardness end then? I mean, can you get harder than some machine hammering noise at 250 bpm? And that already exists ... However, good that you enjoyed the concert. I think, I should visit such a concert at least once for getting a better impression - a whole festival of pure black and/or death metal might be too much for me ;).
