Upcoming Interview With Dengue Fever; What Should I Ask 'em?

Posted about 1 year ago
This Friday, I have an interview scheduled with Dengue Fever.I'll be catching up with the Los Angeles based group prior to their performance at the Independent in San Francisco. If you've never heard of Dengue Fever you should get around to it, they're a pretty far out and unique group. I'm rather excited to sit down with them and pick their collective brain. Their sound combines Cambodian pop music and lyrics with good ol' fashioned psychedelic rock. They cover 1960's Cambodian rock tunes as well as create their own songs. Their work has been featured everywhere from NPR to Matt Dillon's 2002 film, City of Ghosts.Their album ??Escape from Dragon House?? was one of Amazon.com's Top 100 Editor's Picks of 2005.SO, my fellow Moggers, what should I ask this young talented group of artists? I'll be interviewing Chhom Nimol and Ethan Holtzman, 1/3 of the group. Check out some of the tracks from their latest album ??Venus On Earth??(Birdman) at their Myspace:http://www.myspace.com/denguefevermusic

  1. dangerdot says OMG. that picture of Chhom Nimol is H.O.T. My main question is if there is ever any tension between brothers--like the Oasis boys... and if so--over what? Chhom perhaps? so psyched for this interview!!!!

  3. Augusts1 says Cool. I'll have to think about a question to ask. Should be a great show, I've heard they're good live.

  4. Sturgell says Dot, H.O.T. is R.I.G.H.T.! hhehe. Bart, I'm super excited, too. AND we don't have to wait long because it's going down this Friday! SO, hopefully the impressedness will wear off before then. AUGGY, You better think of one! I'm counting on you guys!

  5. Augusts1 says How about this one: Do you find there is a difference in responses from foreign audiences you play to vs. US audiences? (And for the record, I'm not an Auggy, it's too cute of a name for me, but you can call me Aug. Just letting ya know Sturge, no worries, thanks).

  7. Therese says Thank you for recommending them; I had never heard of them before. I checked them out today and I really like them. Their music is awesome! One question I have is: How do they connect with audiences who do not understand what the lyrics are? Is that important to them? The music and her voice are so incredible, it made me want to know what she was saying. Thanks for so much for turning me on to them. It's so good to listen to something different!! Good luck with your interview.

  8. Scotch says Crap, I had put a seperator above the question, "How does a Cambodian musical background...," to denote the serious questions below, and it disappeared. I gotta remember to preview more often...

  9. Scotch says What would Scooby do? What would Sinn Sisamouth do? Was "Malaria" already taken? Do Germans love you, like they love David Hasselhoff? Which weighs more, ramvong or ramkbach? You covered Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now"; would you cover "Holiday in Cambodia? Does your music ever need more cowbell? Which bands do? ------ OK, serious questions ------ How does a Cambodian musical background jive with Western music and instruments? Do many habits have to be unlearned, modified? Who found you for Matt Dillon's "City of Ghosts," and how? Why "Dengue Fever"? Is there some significance, other than Cambodia gets its share of cases?

  11. Mike the Knife says Is there any cure for Dengue Fever? And why?
    Permalink posted 04/14/2008
  12. Scotch says heh Dengue Fever, or Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is pretty nasty stuff, which is why I asked if Malaria was already taken.
    Permalink posted 04/14/2008
  13. Sturgell says Malaria isn't taken! There's plenty to go around!
    Permalink posted 04/15/2008
  14. Scotch says yay!!! So, did ya like my questions? :-P
    Permalink posted 04/15/2008
  15. Sturgell says The short answer: Yes.

  16. indiepixie says this is kinda serious but I visited Cambodia a while back and was devastated by the relics of Pol Pot, the mass genocide, and America's refusal to do anything about it. Can you ask them if they feel the need to take any role in telling ppl about the genocide, Cambodia's history, etc...esp. since they are harking back to 1960s rock? The irony seems almost palpable. From 1975-79 Cambodia was desecrated... Most Americans don't know much about the history, save the film The Killing Fields. Do they ever try to incorporate that history in their music? You can lead into the question by how they feel about the recent death of Dith Pran...the journalist who inspired the film Killing Fields. May be a bit heavy....but I think worthwhile. :) Good luck sturgs! IP

  17. PixieQueen says I'd probably ask something along the lines of why they've started to sing songs in English on their third album. Before, their songs were written in English and the translated, so something along those lines.

  18. Lighter Dusk says Which of the following would be their top band to colloberate with: 1.) Abba 2.) Best Happening 3.) Chesterfield Kings or 4.) Dick Dale. I'm kind of interested to see if they're heading towards pure rock, indie rock, garage rock revival or surf rock revival as well (it seems like their sound meets in the middle somewhere). -Dusk
