The Greatest Guitar Riffs Of All Time

Posted about 1 year ago
Deep Purple's 1973 hit "Smoke on the Water" is the greatest guitar riff of all time, according to a poll by a London music school that has taught members of top bands like Radiohead, The Kinks and The Cure. The majority of the 25 songs selected by current students of the London Tech Music School, were recorded in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Only seven were recorded in the last 20 years."It was the iconic era for the electric guitar," said head of the school's Guitar and Bass section John Wheatcroft."A lot of our students started listening to their parents records and discovered these bands through them."The most recent song selected was "7 Nation Army" recorded by American rock duo The White Stripes in 2003.But Wheatcroft does not believe this spells the end of modern music."The great riffs can simply be the ones that withstood the test of time." he said. "It might just be a question of waiting till the dust settles and in 10 years time it could be completely different."Other songs include "Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix (1967), "Walk This Way" by Aerosmith (1975) and "Money For Nothing" by Dire Straits (1984).A list of the top songs chosen follows:(somehow, I don't think Moggers will agree completely)1. Smoke On The Water - Deep Purple (1973)2. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana (1991)3. Walk This Way - Aerosmith (1975)4. Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix (1967)5. Sweet Child O Mine - Guns N' Roses (1987)6. 1. KoriLinc says Deep Purple number one? I thought Led Zeppelin would lead the way .. WHO makes these up? lol...

  2. midford says It's because they're easy to play! although I wouldn't even attempt some of them. Smoke on the water however is obligatory, wether you like it or not.

  3. Sturgell says Smoke On The Water is for sure the number one ??air guitar?? riff of all time.
    Permalink posted 04/04/2008
  4. Baudolino says Hmmm...curious absence of anything by Bo Diddley and Elmore James gives a tiny cleu as to the age of the voters, no?
    Permalink posted 04/04/2008
  5. deadmandeadman says Each one is cool. The rankings are useless and the list is short a few hundred other classic riffs.
    Permalink posted 04/04/2008
  6. James12 says i agree, deadmandeadman, each one of these is riff is cool, each one means something different to the different generations that first heard them, putting them on a list...I don't agree with that, they're all awesome, although deep purple on top?....i don't know...

  7. yummygatalover says jimi's guitar kicking in on all along the watchtower gets me everytime. 7 nation makes ya march!!!

  8. nailosity says I agree with Deadmandeadman and James 12 - a list makes no sense. Maybe an "unordered" list. But a list? Silly, silly SILLY.

  9. Stereo Type says Duh, duh, duhhhh Duh, duh, du-duhhhh Duh, duh, duhhhhh Duh, duhhhhhhhhh!

  10. Dr Locrian says Only ONE Black Sabbath riff?! That's a crime. Especially with 2 Guns & Roses selections. What about NIB? Black Sabbath? Sweet Leaf?
    Permalink posted 04/04/2008
  11. GarageRock says LOL...Survivor sneaking in at the end! Nice to see Motorhead in there with the only true BASS riff, but the list is obviously ridiculous...

  12. nordico says A collection of Greatest Riffs of All Time that makes no mention of the Rolling Stones has sent me scurrying in search of a lost definition for the word "riff!" And reference to "Eye of the Tiger" destroys any remaining credibility for such a list and begs to be replaced!!! Since the Stones can't be mentioned, apparently, I'll play along and suggest "Rebel, Rebel" by Bowie.......But I still HATE the list!
    Permalink posted 04/04/2008
  13. GarageRock says You know, now that you mentioned it, how can you not have Jumping Jack Flash in the top 3?! Ridiculous...
    Permalink posted 04/04/2008
  14. GarageRock says Kudos to Stereo Type for the Smoke On The Water reference lol...just figured that out
    Permalink posted 04/04/2008
  15. nailosity says Man, this is getting interesting....! Yeah, the "Rebel Rebel" riff caused me and my friends to coin the term "Gernge". Beats "grunge" by at least 20 years.

  16. Groon says Any list like that without "Sunshine of Your Love" is bogus. end of story.
    Permalink posted 04/04/2008
  17. fairportfan says Any list like this that doesn't have *You Really Got Me* somewhere near the top (if not *at* the top) is suspect. One that doesn't mention it *at all* is totally pants. (Checking YouTube for the clip, i found an excerpt from the *Guitar Hero II* game; "*Youi Really Got Me* as made famous by *Van Halen*", it said...)

  18. Vtshome says Couldn't play the song but I remember it well since it was in my and most of my friends players all the time. So Slash (Guns N Roses) gets 3 and Hendrix gets only 2 of the top 25. I guess I need to listen to Slash a little more. I agree with Deadman the rankings mean little all are great and there are many not there that should be.
    Permalink posted 04/04/2008
  19. K7 says Yeah rankings suck ... just enjoy the kick ass guitar riffs!! The great age of guitar gods needs to return. Guitar Hero is not going to help this.

  20. gympumpkin says A lot of those are great. I'm a little surprised with 2 RHCP songs, and I would like to have seen "Layla" and "Sunshine of Your Love" on there.
    Permalink posted 04/04/2008
  21. fairportfan says Well, when i think of *Layla*, what comes to mind first is the piano. Speaking of Cream - The Bobs vocalese version of *White Room*: Consider the "guitar solo" that begins at 2:15. While it is definitely in Clapton's style - and is, indeed, a Clapton solo - it's not from *White Room*. Okay, kiddies - how many of us can say where it *is* from? (*Terry Pratchett*'s novel Soul Music, one of his hilarious "Discworld" fantasy series has a scene in which a guitar store owner tells his troll shop assistant:
"...and if anyone tries to play *Pathway to Paradise*, rip their head off."
    "Shouldn't I give them a warning first?"
    "That *is* their warning."
Ever since i read that, i've wondered if PTerry ever worked in a music store...)

  22. Vtshome says Forgot about Layla...should definately be there. I love the Bobs version of White room with a little "Guitar gently weeps" from Beatles White album
    Permalink posted 04/04/2008
  23. Spike says Also, there's "Louie Louie" and "Day Tripper."
    Permalink posted 04/04/2008
  24. darmuzz says I would have guessed "Satisfaction" as well. But "Smoke on the Water" does get my vote for most recognizable and iconic.
    Permalink posted 04/04/2008
  25. Scotch says The only thing that 10-whatever lists tell me is that lists are stupid as hell. First, define "great". It certainly isn't technical prowess, if this list is any indication. Don't play rock? Don't worry, you're not invited, even if you do but you're not seen as a rocker. And THREE GnR tracks? WTF?! Slash is a riff machine, but c'mon. LISTS, indeed. bah

  28. fairportfan says I love the Bobs version of White room with a little "Guitar gently weeps" from Beatles White album Which we all know ought be titled *While My Friend Eric Clapton-who's-going-to-steal-my-wife's Guitar Gently Weeps*, right?

  29. Doomsayer2001 says Only one Zeppelin riff? What about Kashmir? No Master Of Puppets? Come on now...
    Permalink posted 04/04/2008
  30. Augusts1 says Fuck'n *THREE* Guns N' Roses songs? *TWO* RHCP songs? And only *ONE* Zep song? And Survivor? How the hell did Survivor make it in there? Give me a goddamn break! Eeeeeediots! I know there are a buttload of riffs that I can't think of at the moment that should be on that list. And Sturge, what ever made you think that us moggers wouldn't completely agree? We're such a follow the crowd bunch dontcha think? hehe

  31. christheskins says Yeah lists are daft...but fun! . The top of this one does display a rather skewed demographic, not reflecting a particularly eclectic taste ,shall we say? Come on Moggers ,you cant beat em so join in... 34. Jonh Ingham says Satisfaction. Whole Lotta Love. Black Dog. Not Fade Away. Mona (and every other Bo Dddley riff).

  35. Pyro says If it wasn't for the White Stripes..all the other riffs would be before 2000..? too bad.
    Permalink posted 04/05/2008
  36. Pyro says (Lame) How about D.A.D's 'Sleeping My Day Away' riff?(1989) It rocks!
    Permalink posted 04/05/2008
  37. brendanhalpin says I object to the inclusion of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," since that riff is just the riff from "Debaser", which is, though I hate to admit this, really just the riff from "More Than a Feeling" sped up. I think attention must be paid to Kiss' "Detroit Rock City"--that opening riff shows up in tons and tons of songs
