MORE Reports Of Violence Against 'Emos' Coming In From Mexico

Posted about 1 year ago
"As previously reported":PP a few weeks ago, reports of a clash between several hundred Mexican heavy metal, "skate punk" and alternative rock fans against a group of "emos" in the in the center of Querétaro, Mexico (who regularly use the city center as a gathering place). The resulting violence left four people injured and 28 persons were arrested (22 of them minors) when more than a thousand youths battled in the area of Jardín Guerrero, Plaza de Armas (front of the Government Palace). It's happening again.LA Weekly's Daniel Hernandez reports on his blog Intersections that a bizarre wave of mob emo-bashings ("emos" are followers of the "emo" subculture, which is short for "emotional") is sweeping across Mexico. According to Hernandez, "The movement is being generated on message boards and social networking sites by non-emo youth who highly dislike like the emo look and attitude. The spark came first in Queretaro on March 7. An estimated 800 young people poured into the city's Centro Historico hunting for emos to beat the crap out of. They found some. The next weekend it spread to Mexico City, where emos faced off against punks and rockabillies at the Glorieta de Insurgents, the epicenter of emo social space in the capital. There's also been reports of anti-emo violence in Durango, Colima, and elsewhere."To read more of Daniel Hernandez report"CLICK HERE":HRThe following videos are from Spanish speaking Mexican news:An update on how the Mexican emos are fighting back can be found "HERE":FB[FB]http://danielhernandez.typepad.com/daniel_hernandez/2008/03/the-emos-in-mex.html[HR]http://danielhernandez.typepad.com/daniel_hernandez/2008/03/violence-agains.html[PR]http://mog.com/Sturgell/blog_post/149771

  10. Hermes says Oh my god. I was told that fans of the Gothic subculture - they call it simply "dark" over there had been arrested by the police for the way they look a few years ago. Now it are the emos attacked by punks. Oddly enough, there's no Hooligan culture involved in Mexican soccer like it is in Europe, so soccer games are much more peaceful. And now that. Strange world.

  11. bryan-j says (I wasn't there personally, I just mean culturaly (I had an eye test today and everything I spell looks wrong - must be those Russians leaving Platonium around - or maybe sometimes you have a spelling block - that's an unconscious link (Soviet Block). Well they had the Russian revolution but that was too tramatic to allow any further dissent like teenage angst.

  19. Ohm51 says That was actually a brilliant move by the Hari Krishnas ... giving the rivaling factions of youth a mutual object of perhaps shared derision. Not that I think so, George Harrison is my friend and all ... but you know how these crazy kids are. Seriously though, it was bad enough when Hip Hop had embraced murderous rivalries as part of their musical DNA. Gang / mob us-vs-them mentalities are demonstrably dangerous. Hope they get over this ... but knowing people (sigh)... it will probably escalate.

  22. boscojim says I don't care if my comment offends you, but I wish both emos and punks didn't exist. So both groups can go fuck off. I care less for their styles. I'm mexican american and i find it sad to see so many youth belonging to either group. What's the matter with the world today. I know I'm not helping, but I just needed to get this off my chest.

  26. Lighter Dusk says Wow...violence bred from differences in appearance and opinions...earth-shaking. I expect next a news break about Cain not liking Abel's Red Hot Chili Peppers collection to follow shortly. Seriously...as the resident evil fuck around my parts, I gotta say, this is great!! People have found a way around hate crime laws by blaming it on music/clothing choices. Who cares if Punks are clobbering Emos...it just shows the over all cowardice to gangs in general (nothing against punk BTW). If they really wanted their "anti-whatever" message to be taken seriously, maybe they would target bankers, lawyers and politicians instead of misfits who have found a style to identify with. "Yeah man...we're tough hombres...we beat up nerds in glasses who like rock bands with female lead singers...that'll show the world who the bad asses are!!!" Act like Nell Carter and gimme a break fools. -Dusk
