Johnny Marr On Touring With R.E.M.; Wants To Play With The Cribs

Posted about 1 year ago
Twenty years ago, The Smiths and R.E.M. were just two bands that happen to come along and in part define a decade. Guitarist Johnny Mar, once with the Smiths and now with Modest Mouse, recently weighed in on his current group's upcoming tour with the legendary Athens, Georgia trio in the US this May.R.E.M. is in promotion mode for their April 1 release of ??Accelerate??, Marr says the prospect of joining forces with them is an exciting one:Will they be able to define a decade once again? BBC recently caught up with Marr and published his remarks regarding the tour.“I am really fired up about this, I’m excited about hearing their new stuff actually, it sounds petty good what I have hear of it so far.”??Johnny Marr??Marr was also keen to elaborate on his Cribs collaboration saying, “when we get back from touring I want to get it finished.”Marr has been adding his skill and experience to a secret song writing session with the post punk group which could be released as a proper album or EP.He also hinted on a possible live slot with them too.“If I am in England I will play with them at Reading, they are my favorite UK band, so it’s nice.”Prior to their North American dates Modest Mouse will perform a series of shows in Australia. They play Sydney's V Festival this weekend, 29 March.??The Cribs?? The Cribs are an English 3-piece post-punk band from Netherton, Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The group areknown for their raucous, unpredictable live shows the band have built-up a fanatical following due to a heavy touring schedule since the release of the first record. Their DIY ethic also led to them touring independently, when they were supposed to be off the road writing. Although this contributed to the bands success, and much larger venues, the band have always claimed to be more at home doing things in that way.The Cribs' official page:http://www.thecribs.com/

  1. bagelradio says Johnny Marr is a rock star. With the Smiths. In Electronic. Solo. In Modest Mouse. He exudes the cool of a front man even when he's not the front man.

  3. Jonh Ingham says I'm a latecomer to Johnny Marr's brilliance but I'm amused and amazed at every interview I've read. What chance Marr joining REM on an encore?

  4. brendanhalpin says I was thinking the same thing. I'd love to see REM cover a Smiths song with Johnny Marr, but who knows if he'd go for that. "Please Please Please..." would probably suit Stipe's voice best, but I'd go for "Ask" or maybe "London", though Anthrax already covered that. (in quite kickass fashion, I might add)
