Leonard Cohen Announces Tour Dates; First In 15 Years

Posted about 4 years ago
Canadian singer-songwriter, poet and novelist Leonard Cohen has scheduled nearly 40 European performances this Summer. The tour, the first for the 73-year-old in nearly 15 years, will not include any dates in the United States. "As previously reported":PR, Cohen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (March 10) for his status among the "highest and most influential echelon of songwriters." Currently Cohen is working on his 12th studio album, which is expected to be released later this year via Columbia.Cohen's last album, 2004's ??Dear Heather??(Columbia) featured more female lead singing and a marked increase in read poetry over sung lyrics. The 73 year old Canadian artist's style appears to be diverging from that of 2001's Ten New Songs leaning towards his prolific skills as poet.??No mention of any American dates, but we'll keep ya posted.??Summer Tour:June 6-7: Toronto (Sony Centre)June 14: Dublin (IMMA)June 17-20: Manchester, England (Manchester International Festival)June 23-26: Montreal (Place des Arts)June 29: Glastonbury, England (Glastonbury Festival)July 1: Oslo (Aliset Stadium)July 3: Helsingborg, Sweden (Open Air)July 5: Copenhagen (Rosenborg Castle)July 6: Arhuus, Denmark (Raadhus Parken)July 8: Montreux, Switzerland (Jazz Festival)July 9: Lyon, France (Lyon Festival)July 10: Bruges, Belgium (Cactus)July 12: Amsterdam (Westerdam)July 16: Edinburgh (Castle)July 17: London (O2 Arena)July 19: Lisbon (Passeio Maritimo)July 20: Bennicasim, Spain (Bennicasim Festival)July 22: Nice, France (Jazz Festival)July 25: Lorrach, Germany (Stimmen De Welt)July 27: Lucca, Italy (Summer Festival)July 29: Athens (Lykabettus Theatre)Aug. 3: Ledbury, England (Big Chill)Aug. 5-6: Istanbul (Arena)Aug. 10: Prague (Castle)Aug. 12: Budapest (Sziget)Aug. 14-15: Girona, Spain (Cap Roig)Aug. 28-29: Vienna (Opera House)"More Here":CH[CH]http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003723137[PR]http://mog.com/Sturgell/blog_post/139115

  1. starspring says Lack of US dates doesn't surprise me at all as he has always been more appreciated in Europe and elsewhere than he was in the US. IN the US he was always tagged as a pop songwriter who wrote poetry rather than a poet who wrote songs. Also his last several records have fared rather poorly in the US in terms of sales.

  2. AA Coppertop says As an American, I find myself saying "Ouch" once again. I hope the European tour is a warm-up. Still, I can't deny what starspring says, and doubt that Cohen regards playing for his most loyal fans as mere tryout dates.

  3. ardyjormkiv says i don't know anything about his music except that he wrote 'hallelujah'. and for that, i will be forever grateful. in addition, i am very much grateful for you sending the kind words along with the mog-goodies. i was also surprised to learn "sturgell has a first name?!?" thanks!

  4. getafade says Yeah, it's too bad he won't be coming to the States, but I was thinking of going to Europe this summer...maybe I'll try to catch a show.

  5. levek says Cohen will be at the Montreal Jazz Festival (Place des Arts venue) in June, but I won't attend; I can't afford it. Tickets sell from $151.35 to $226.35...

  6. Scotch says And yet another reason (albeit very small) to move to Europe. :P

  7. laura27 says lol @ Scotch. I hope I can get tickets for the Dublin show, I'd pretty much given up hope of seeing Leonard Cohen. If it's extortionate prices though I might not be able to :(
