Eric Clapton Invited To Play North Korea

Posted about 1 year ago
Eric Clapton has been invited to play a concert in North Korea, despite the country’s nuclear ambitions being a cause for international concern. The guitar legend is provisionally set to play the state capital Pyongyang in 2009, having agreed to the idea "in principle" reports the BBC.Clapton's performance would be unusual as rock and pop are forbidden in the isolated state, because of their Western influences.Classical music, on the other hand, is very popular.A North Korean official told the Financial Times: "These cultural exchanges are a way of promoting understanding between countries."We want our music to be understood by the Western world, and we want our people to understand Western music." 1. kaluss says north korea is doing this in order to look reasonable to the world community....but clapton should definitely go...good live rock and roll speaks to all cultures..as we on the mogos know. plus, when those folks get a taste of live clapton - hopefully they can sneak in some good rice wine - they'll never go back!

  2. Augusts1 says Interesting how eastern cultures try in earnest to keep western culture at bay but eventually give in. They like us, they really, really like us @= P

  4. brendanhalpin says It's a brilliant scheme to bring the government down. No pop music allowed, and Slow Hand's gonna go over there and get "Wonderful Tonight" stuck in all their brains. They'll be begging for mercy before the second encore....

  7. extraordinarypoems says Thanks for sharing this important info, and thanks to ZZTodd for reminding me of the New York Philharmonic visit also. I want to share this info with students at our poetry workshop tomorrow, to emphasize that artists can go where others can't go, into the troubled places of our world. Percy Shelley once wrote, "Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world." Eric Clapton is definitely a poet.

  10. Lighter Dusk says All of my usual sarcasm and bile aside... "We want our music to be understood by the Western world, and we want our people to understand Western music." What a beautiful thing for someone to say...it's awesome that they get Clapton...now let's expose the Moggers to some crazy North Korean style bands...fair is fair, right? -Dusk
