    A Very Silent Night
A single released in New Zealand exclusively for dogs is looking to go global on the heels of it's recent chart topping success. The track has been lauded for promoting animal rights and was also presented as a music video featuring New Zealand artist Dei Hamo. All this in spite of the fact nobody has actually heard the 'song'.The track entitled "??A Very Silent Night??" can not be heard by human ears and can only be heard by animals that can hear outside of the normal human range. The single was sold during December 2007 to raise funds for the Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).*It reached number one* on the 24th of December 2007 and became the New Zealand Christmas number one. The next week the song dropped from number 1 to number 16 in the chart.*A Very Silent Night Promo. Feat. Dei Hamo*??But what do the dogs think about it??"The most violent one was a dog that physically attacked the radio when it was played and went quite berserk and totally destroyed it," said Bob Kerridge, chief executive of animal welfare group, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)."On the other side of the scale, they just lie down and did nothing." The charity CD, priced at NZ$4.99 ($3.93), contained an instrumental and a vocal version of the song, but Kerridge said he did not know what kind of music dogs would hear."Never having heard it myself, I don't know what they'll hear and of course I don't know how dogs hear music," he said."More Here":CH[CH]http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080218/music_nm/newzealand_dc

  2. Giggles says Wow...who actually bought this CD? Or maybe even more importantly who made the music if humans can't even hear it? For all anybody knows there isn't even anything playing during the track since most dog did nothing. Maybe the dog who attacked the radio was just injected with steroids. haha I don't know just a thought. Sweet post though.

  4. Groon says For all anybody knows there isn't even anything playing during the track since most dog did nothing Huh, hadn't even thought of that aspect of it. It's an emperor's new clothes sort of situation. No one can actually hear it, but they're all afraid to admit they might've been duped.

  5. Augusts1 says This reminds me of the scene in the movie "Pootie Tang" where Pootie records a single w/no sound that becomes a HUGE hit. Tried to find a clip from that scene on youtube but couldn't find one. Love that movie & own it! So I guess this is life imitating art, haha!

  9. Spike says This is reminiscent of two other items: avant-garde composer John Cage's "4:11" from 1952 in which a pianist sits silently for that length of time; and my teenage daughter's cell-phone ringtone which is high enough so that I can't hear it but she can.

  10. Jonh Ingham says At the end of Sgt. Pepper after the piano chord, there's a dog whistle. Lennon's idea, There's also a device in the UK called a Mosquito, a box that emits an irritating sound that's so high only teenagers can hear it. Shopowners put it up outside their business so that delinquent kids won't hang around outside causing problems. (Now some lawyer is claiming that it damages their human rights.)

  11. Lighter Dusk says This has got to be one of the coolest, out of the box, abstract musical comcepts. Think about it, it's music...but it can't be appreciated. That's absolutely mind blowing. It would certainly be more interesting if there was an audible copy of the song...but then it would lose it's "art for art's sake" feel. They went through all the effort of creating "music" that even they can't hear. Brilliant. Not enough to get me to spend money on it....but I wonder how many people will illegally download it. "Risking prosecution to download copyrighted silence" That sentence is just short of beautiful...God Bless America! -Dusk
