MUSIC CHATTER AND MATTER

New Jersey Prowler Non Other Than Bob Dylan

Posted 3 months ago

Two New Jersey cops were given a crash corse on 20th century music history when they reported on a suspicious looking man in Long Branch. After detaining Bob Dylan for lack of proper ID, the 68-year-old legend had employees at the hotel he was staying at vouch for him, reports Sky News.

"The policewoman was very young and did not recognise Dylan - there was another officer with her and even he did not recognise Dylan," a Long Branch police official explained. "Both said they never listened to his music and had no idea what he looked like."

Dylan biographer Howard Sounes, author of Down The Highway, sums it up best:

"He is this charming and eccentric character but it is almost like he gets dressed in the dark," he said.

"Friends talk of him dressing as a tramp and driving around in a pickup with dogs in the front - that chic 1960s look disapppeared somewhere along the way and he turned into a male bag lady."

A similar event happened to Beethoven near the end of his life.

"Beethoven then staying at Baden, got up early and went out. Absentmindedly he walked on until evening; then, having lost his way and having had nothing to eat, he was seen looking in at the windows of the houses. The alarmed inhabitants called the local constable, who arrested him. ‘I am Beethoven,’ said the composer. ‘Of course, why not! You’re a tramp: the Beethoven doesn’t look so,’ was the reply, and he was locked up. The next stage of the story is that as the Commissioner of Police was enjoying himself with a little party in a tavern garden, a constable arrived saying: ‘Mr. Commissioner, we have arrested somebody who gives us no peace. He keeps on yelling that he is Beethoven; but he’s a ragamuffin, has an old coat and no hat ... nothing to identify him by.’ The Commissioner ordered the man to be kept under arrest till morning and retired to rest himself. At 11 p.m. he was waked by a policeman saying: ‘The prisoner keeps demanding that Herzog, the musical director of Wiener Neustadt, shall be fetched to identify him.’ At this the Commissioner was wise enough to get up, dress and fetch Herzog in the middle of the night. The instant Herzog saw the ‘tramp’ he exclaimed: ‘That is Beethoven!’ The comedy ended by Herzog entertaining Beethoven at his house and the Commissioner sending the guest home next morning in the magisterial state-coach!"     (http://www.musicweb-international.com/Scott/Scottbook/Chapter7.htm)

Bruce Springsteen's Darkness on the Edge of Town broke new ground for The Boss in 1978. A counterpoint to the operatic elegance of Born to Run, the album was an angry, raw record that burst forth after a three-year hiatus.Because of its darker tones, Darkness is a difficult album for the casual listener, but for Bruce's legion of dedicated fans, it is a cherished gem.
The Light in Darkness is a forthcoming book that celebrates this classic Springsteen work.It will be launched this September.

I read the article about this too!  The lady officer looks like she's 16!  Apparently, Mr. Dylan was very nice, but asked that once he was identified, they take him back to the "for sale" house he was looking at.  This worried the police even more, thinking that he maybe escaped from one of their "hospitals".

I let out a HUGE gaffaw when my BF read this story to me...I used to live in Long Branch. They'd better get used to this if they want to keep marketing LB as the new Shore destination.

I think LB actually planted the story for the pub or...this can't be real.
